I remember that day really well. My parents had their house warming party that day and wasn't planning or even thinking about the world series. Well, it turned into a world series party really quick and being in Connecticut made it that much more crazy.

I thought Bostonians referred to Bill Buckner as Billy "F-n" Buckner when they talk about that play from the 1986 WS. I wonder if Billy "F-n" Buckner remembers this day every year? Ah, the curse of the Bambino has been lifted so he doesn't have to carry that heavy load anymore...

ESPN had an intriguing perspective on it today. They had an interview with Buckner and his wife, talking about how Sox fans would say "we forgive Buckner now" after the Sox won two WS titles.

His wife's take on it was, Buckner was the one who should be forgiving the fans. Buckner was crucified in Boston for years, so much so that his family moved to Idaho to get away from Boston fans.

The story really made me think about it from Buckner's perspective - good story...

Let's give credit too to Schiraldi for giving up three straight hits (as I recall twice the Mets were down to their last strike) and to Stanley for a wild pitch.

Schiraldi pitched well in Game 7 too, it made a lot of sense to go back to him in a tie game, 3 straight hits again (one a home run this time) with a wild pitch thrown in for good measure.

I think most of those people doing the crucifying were the less knowledgeable or the ultra casual fan. Darn shame.

Buckner was man enough to appear on Curb Your Enthusiasm this past season, in which Larry David wrote a show that spoofed the moment. Larry befriends Buckner at a baseball card show, and tosses him the Mookie Wilson ball he had signed...which slips through Buckner's hands and drops out a window! Later in the episode a woman is forced to throw her baby three stories out of a burning building, and Buckner catches it on a fly and ends up the hero. But the episode had passersby cursing him as he walked down the street, and he told Larry he gets that every day. I bet that part is true.

Bill Buckner was and is a class guy. The ESPN feature was incredible, I wish more people had seen it.
Bob Stanley was more than happy to throw Billy Buck under the bus despite his wild pitch which tied the game and putting the winning run in scoring position. Now there is a classless individual

Bill Buckner is a class act. People forget too that he was a hell of a good player back in his day.

In 2010, the actual "Mookie Ball" was on display in the Mets Museum and Hall of Fame at Citi Field.

In 2011, the "Mookie Ball" was replaced by another 1986 World Series ball that was used in Game 6, signed on either side by both Mookie Wilson and Bill Buckner (signatures not visible in this photo).

Perhaps the title of this thread should be updated on an annual basis. When I saw it, I was trying to figure out what the hell happened in 1987.
