Nice signature with an interesting story. I am not an autograph person but this one looks similar to most of the good ones I have seen. Thoughts on it's legitimacy? I just thought the story was interesting so posted....

![]() To me it looks like a fresh signature on a recently scuffed-up ball.

I am not a Ruth expert, but if I am going to pay what most Ruth balls sell for, I want to see images of all sides of the ball and super close up of the signature to check for feathering.

I think the Pawn shop owner has to take some blame himself. No way in heck are you going to sell a Ruth for 1,500 if the signature is clear even if you are hard up, the owner had to know something was up, and was just bit when the new buyer wanted it certed. I wonder how much the ball was selling in the shop for. |

Out of curiosity, what does "feathering" mean and how does one check for it? I would also like to pick up a Ruth ball some day, and want to check to what to look for. I would still want an LOA from PSA or JSA, but I realize some sigs may get past them also.

More or less feathering is the fraying from new ink on an old ball, I don't have an sample handy, but once you see it you will know what I mean

This guy lives 6 miles from me. Crime does not pay (much) in his case.

Feathering Usually follows the Tarring so that the feathers have something to stick to

Seriously..the feathering referred to in regards to the Babe Ruth ball on this thread would have likely occured as a result of the forger , either using sandpaper or emory to remove any markings that would ID the ball as being POST 1948 (when Ruth died) ,
So simply put ..under magnification the area around the signatures would look like small rivers (or feathers) due to the rate of absorbtion of new ink applied to a recently reconditioned surface. On OLD items the ink absorbed would appear more like a Halow around the signature when looked at under a "scope". |
