So, do you think Roger Clemens is attempting a comeback so that, if he makes a Major League roster and gets into a game, his eligibility for the Hall of Fame will be pushed back five more years, thus putting more distance between his first year on the HOF ballot and his steroid/lying to Congress trial?

I read the Astros are sending scouts to watch him.

He been clocked at 87, and that wasn't even during a game. If he can get it up to 91 or 92, he make it to the show for at least a cup of coffee.

87mph with good control and a few other good pitches could get a sip 'o coffee in the Bigs.....and he definitely would have draw power, which is a big plus to any franchise.

The real question is what is his motivation. I think he's trying to put distance between the HOF voting and his alleged use of steroids.

Michael Jordan's second comeback was pretty sad as well. On the other side, George Foreman's comeback to win the heavyweight title at age 45 was awesome.

If he signed tomorrow with the Brewers he would already be their number 3
Heck they have Livan Hernandez who tops out these days at 83-84 |

I wish Barry Sanders would've unretired but I guess his dislike for the Lions outweighed that.
Also, at 87 mph, that was about all Mike Mussina had for a fastball in his last year with the Yankees in 2008 and he had a solid season. But he had great control and could throw offspeed pitches 25 mph slower than his fastball. "Everything but the kitchen sink". |

As has often been said, Barry Sanders rushed for the most yards if you include sideways and backwards.

I would love to see Clemens make it all the way back to the bigs. He was working with a slower fastball toward the end, and was quite successful. If he could become a bit more Moyer-ish, I think it could happen.

I'd love to see anyone older than me in MLB. My theory is that as long as a player in a vigorous professional sport is older than me I am not middle-aged. Right now I'm hanging on to my youth by a few threads named Bernard Hopkins and Evander Holyfield. So, go Clemens!

i loved jimmy key as a pitcher. he had an arsenal of pitches without breaking 90 mph. clemens would need a few other pitches as well as a september start

To pass his MLB physical he has to be able to see his feet.

Tell that to C.C. He doesn't even know if he still has feet.

Now no one has ever said Roger was a rocket scientist or has a first grader's grasp of logic, but doesn't a 50 year old player pitching well with a great fastball in isolated outing in a league that doesn't test for PEDs after a long layoff and a couple of years of not being PED tested merely put more, rather than his intended less, suspicion that he's a PED user?
I remember when Roger would 'retire' then come back in the middle of the season with the Yankees, conveniently bypassing off season and early season drug testing and pitching great. Coming out of retirement this way reminded me of his old Yankees 'return out of retirements' habit. Last edited by drc; 08-29-2012 at 01:51 PM. |
