Hey all,
So, I've been thinking for a while about putting a set together of signatures from the 1936 Yankees (my favorite team), and I was hoping I might be able to get a little guidance from you seasoned experts out there. Now, what I'm looking for is autographs on album pages for the most part, as it's not crucial for me to have any of the names on beautifully, single-signed GPCs or anything (though I won't necessarily say 'no' to a nice one at a good price). This especially applies to the tougher, more expensive guys, including Gehrig and Lazzeri. I guess my only caveat is that they be period (preferably from '36, if it's at all possible), and they REALLY don't have to be in pen - I would probably even prefer pencil! I guess what I wanted to know is, what might you think I would have to pay for, say, an album page with a Gehrig and Lazzeri (or one or the other) with a couple of other players from the team? I figure that I might be better off not needed the single signed stuff, or that they can be in pencil, but I would imagine it's still gonna cost a couple of thousand for something like that, right? Are there any auctions or dealers that I might want to keep an eye out for? I'm not super concerned with the TPA stuff, but obviously, I'd like to deal with people who are reputable and knowledgeable. And heck, would you think anyone would even want a painting or something in exchange rather than cash? These are loaded questions, I know, and I'm sure that they're no rock solid solutions, but I thought some of you might have some good advice. That is, if you're willing to share it. For the record, I do already have one with DiMaggio and a few others, so at least he's covered. And I would love to include some of the executives and other related figured in the project (Ruppert, Barrow, Weiss, Roth, secretaries, batboys, announcers, etc.). There's definitely NO rush in putting any of this together, so I guess I can be patient. But yeah, I would appreciate anything you guys might be able to offer in terms of wisdom. Thanks!! Graig

I was working on the same project couple years ago but stopped. I was including the Giants team also from 1938.
But Graig have you thought about doing a team painting and then having the sigs be part of the painting. Maybe mount them somehow to the painting, I think that would be sweet. |

yeah, a least a couple of thousand if you want gehrig. thats just reality.
the other guys wont be too bad, but gehrig is the stickler, theres no too many deals on gehrig, no matter where it is auctioned or offered for sale, it will cost a bit. if it is too cheap, (and even if it is not), you got to make sure its real. i would ask opinions of more than one person you trust to make sure you dont get stuck. dont feel pressured to try to find one right away because there is no hurry. autographs always come around and go around, and none of the autos on that team are once in a lifetime rare. good luck. |

Gehrig and Lazzeri will likely be the most expensive and you should be especially careful of pencil cuts. I sell pencil cuts but they are almost 100% of the time cuts removed from the autograph albums in which I buy in their entirety in most cases from the original collectors or their families. The TOUGHEST autographs from the 1936 Yankees will not be Gehrig or Lazzeri. The toughest will likely be
Steve Sundra (Died-1952) but rumor has it due to health problems he was unable to sign for several years prior to his death. Perce "Pat" Malone (Died-1943) Jake Powell (Died-1948) commited suicide in a Washington D.C. Police station while being questioned about a crime. Good luck with the project. |
