I was going through the results this morning and that one did blow me away also. I was trying to do some research on the card and see if I am missing something. At almost 18K I am stumped!

I love Munson more than anyone and grew up idolizing him but this price was absolutely insane! I thought it would go to for like 3-4k but 17k+ is insanity!

No one was likely more surprised than the consignor, in a good way of course.

I'm not an autograph guy but was a huge Munson fan--easily my favorite player throughout his career. In addition to the high quality of the card and the sig, maybe it had something to do with the fact that it would have been signed the year of his death, perhaps not long beforehand. Morbid but some people may place extra value on that. Are there alot of '79 signed Munson items on the market?

Good point Todd. Thurman passed on 8/2/1979 so there wasnt a large window of time to get the signature on the card before his passing.
A 1974-90 Topps Baseball Complete Signed Set Run sold a few months back for $80K and that collection included 4 different signed Munsons including a 1979 version. Almost $18K for this card has to be a record setter ![]()

is there a modern and vintage concept in autograph like there is in cards? 18k for a 1978 topps psa10 checklist sounds absurd, by apply that to a t206 drum and it's downright reasonable...
18k for the munson sounds absurd to me. |

That price is utterly Ridiculous. My favorite player that I ever watched play, and its still RIDICULOUS. He didn't die till August either, so there were a few months after the cards came out for it to be signed. Makes me wish I still had the stub signed from a month before he died still. Could probably get someone to way overpay for that too.

Once it hit $5k+ I was thinking wow, but once it hit $15k I was shocked. He's not even a top 3 catcher of all time. Sure he was good, but not $18k good for a '79 topps card.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but how do you certify an autograph of someone like this? "Players like Byron McLaughlin (1979-1981 Topps), who was out of baseball in 1983 and working in a counterfeit consumer goods operation in Mexico. He pleaded guilty to money laundering, posted bail and fled, with his current whereabouts “unknown.”" |
