On ebay closing tonight is a 1921 Exhibit Walter Johnson SGC 60 - however, I think the only real 1921 Exhibit is with him throwing, horizontal pose - I could be wrong.
If this is incorrect labeling by SGC, what is the correct year/series for this Johnson card? Big thanks, sorry no can do links. I wanna bid, but unsure ??? |

It's a '26-'29 PC Back Exhibit.
I'm bidding too, good luck. ![]()

Yes, I do believe you are correct with the 1926-29 pc issue. I just love the 1920's exhibits.
My grandfather used to live in D.C. - he saw W.Johnson live several times - said he was the best pitcher he ever saw. My mom saw Koufax when she lived in Hollywood as a young girl. And I saw Ryan when I lived in SoCal in 1970's. I wish MLB would come to Portland, OR - my friends don't understand the baseball hype as they did not grow up with the game. You have a whole different love for the game when its a part of your local life. |

Upon closer examination, the back of this Walter Johnson is blank.
The real 1926-29 Exhibits always have "Postcard" pre-printed on the upper back with a pre-printed square to put the stamp. So... is this intfact a 1926-29 Exhibit? Or a rare variation that had no print on back? Or is it not really a 1926-29 after all? I doubt it is a 1921 like the SGC label says. And now I doubt it is a 1926-29. The mystery deepens - what is it? I put in a solid bid last night - lucky enough to get it - but I am unsure of exactly what year/issue it really is. ps I really tried to paste a link, can't figure it out, sorry Last edited by Touch'EmAll; 01-13-2012 at 09:13 AM. It's 26-29 Exhibits. The first run ("Set 81") was blank backed. Adam or Scott can probably go into it more.

Big thanks you guys. Net54 rocks!
So some 1926-29 Postcard back Exhibits were actually blank backed, hmmm - you learn something every day. And I thought I was pretty good with these cards. Any chance of someone looking up the PSA pop numbers on this card? Thanks again. This one will fit in well with my collection, er, investments, haha. |

I think PSA POP reports are free to anyone now.

Thanks - did not realize the pop numbers were now for everyone to see - very nice, thanks PSA.
I noticed 2 varieties exist, regular back and blank back. The blank backs seem to be more rare for the 1926-29 Exhibit set. |

not more rare... its from the set called "Set 81" ......like mentioned earlier.
they are blank backed there is also the "Set 82", and "Set 83" the so called set known as 1925-31 "Postcard Back" Exhibits is really a group of sets some with the PC back some w/o, and with roughly the same design (caption style). there are a few different types of PC backs within this "set" as well here is good info ....see Adams post (Exhibitman) http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=133443 |

Thanks for the link showing additional info. I called SGC today about this card. They were very helpful, said they would look into it, get back to me. They did call back, said it was infact mislabelled. SGC even called the ebay seller and talked. They said have the ebay seller send the card directly to SGC for re-labeling, then SGC will send me the card with the new correct label. OK, nice, but after looking at your link additional info, what will SGC ultimatly put on the label?
Option 1 "1926-29 P.C. Exhibit blank back" OPtion 2 "1926-29 Exhibit blank back" Option 3 "1926-29 Exhibit" Option 4 "1925-31 P.C. Exhibit Set 81" Option 5 other______________________ |

FWIW, my research indicates that the initial runs of the issue were made with blank backs or backs that had a postcard design with the words “THIS SIDE FOR CORRESPONDENCE” printed on them. Later runs substituted the phrase “NOT TO BE USED IN EXHIBIT MACHINES” for the “correspondence” legend, and still-later print runs added “MADE IN USA” to the card backs.
IMO it should all be labeled "1925-31 Exhibit Postcard Back"

This is my card. I create my own labels for non-graded cards, and I usually stick with the Standard Catalog terminology. (My catalog is from 2005). Is this the card you just acquired?

Yes, that is the card, blank back and all. Just oozes vintage, doesn't it. Bewilders me why value is so low, relatively, for these exhibits of upper tier HOFers in nice shape. They are truly rare, have square corners, have awesome real life photos, seemingly everything a collector would want...but not the high price.
