Hi, I recently picked up this neat photo in a great looking frame. As I typically focus on T206's and woodcuts, I have 0 knowledge in photos and have an uncanny ability in acquiring reprints
![]() This particular photo caught my attention as it has a lot going on from the ball and bat display to the ribbons. It looks like the photograph was taken by a man named Geo W Haskins from Rochester. The only connection that I could find with someone of that name is for a gentleman who had his own glass studio (link). It's my understanding that Culver field in Rochester was in existence from 1886 until 1892 until it burned down and then rebuilt in 1898. Does anyone recognize the location or anyone in the photo? I'm also going to check with some folks in the Rochester area. One other thing....and I know this is WAY of a stretch but the guy in the upper right hand corner not wearing a hat looks a little bit like John Ward....I know I know I'm getting way too ahead of myself and I'm 99.9% sure that there's no connection but figured I'd throw it out there. Thanks. Last edited by aquarius31; 10-30-2011 at 10:58 AM. |

That's a terrific photograph- and look at all those kids sitting in the front row. But the faces aren't large or clear enough to try and identify anyone. Chances are you won't, though you never know. But I can't make out any faces with sufficient clarity.

I was hoping the guy sitting on the far right was Henry Chadwick...but it is not. Looks to be a town team but I'll keep looking for a familiar face.

Hi, I wanted to provide more information on this particular photograph based on some feedback I received from a few NY historians. There was agreement that the photo was taken in the Rochester area and some speculation that it may have been in front of a rural railway station (based on the unique posts in the photo) vs the front of a stadium. I may never find out but what is more interesting is the background of this photographer. Below is the response I received from one of the experts. I love learning about the "historical" context of photographs such as this one
![]() "The photo you have with the Haskins stamp was taken by the stained glass artist George W. Haskins, some time between 1888 and 1895. In the early 1890s Haskins was working odd jobs laborer, bookkeeper, printer, etc, he was "finding himself". His one passion was photography. Haskins was an active member of the Camera Club of Rochester, established in 1888, and would sit on it's Board of Directors in 1890. This photo must be from Haskins these pre stained glass days. Haskins would join up with Sidney H. Collyer in 1895 and start Haskins & Collyer Art Glass." |

Maybe all the male members of a town recreational league?
Whatever it is, great job on the historical digging. Amazing to be able to connect the dots on such a seemingly random photo. |
