Default Witmor Candy

I'm assuming that a complete set is impossible. PSA has graded only 14 and SGC only 19 cards.

How do we know there are 80 cards in the series?
How do we know they were produced in 1922 and not 1921-22 like the W575's?

When I bought this G Kelly card it is mis-labeled W575 (clearly says Witmor Candy on the back).

Thanks,

Default complete set?

I have my doubts as to there being a complete set of these Witmors in existence. They are so tough to find a specific player...single types are not that difficult, but to find each and every player with that back would be tough.

I also classify them as W575. We will never know for sure but when Burdick said "various sets" next to W575 and then "similar to E121,E122,E220,W501" he, to me, was referring to the multitude of different backs with similar fronts. I love to hear counter arguments and I know there are some good ones. regards

I currently own 26 different Witmor's which may be one of the larger accumulations out there as you generally have to piece them together slowly. I have been checklisting them for quite some time which is made difficult by the fact that there are actually 3 different backs known for the brand.

I own...
1921 Witmor Candy -Vertical Hank Gowdy
1921 Witmor Candy -Vertical John McGraw
1921 Witmor Candy -Vertical Ivy B. Wingo
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) J. Franklin Baker
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Max Carey (Batting)
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Jake Daubert
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Charles Deal (Light Uniform)
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) William Doak
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Johnny Evers
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) John Graney
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Wm. C. Jacobson
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Hugh Jennings
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) George Kelly
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Dick Kerr
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) P. J. Kilduff
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) John Lavan
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Al Mamaux
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Jack McInnis
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Otto Miller
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Jeff Pfeffer (St. Louis)
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Bob Veach (Hand in air)
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) Fred Williams
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (no glove) "Pep" Young
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (with glove) Owen Bush
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (with glove) George Dauss
1921 Witmor Candy -Horizontal (with glove) Carl Mays

I have checklisted 35 different players being made for the set with their associated backs, no doubt they made at least 80 different players for the set we just haven't seen them all yet.

Here are the 3 different backs known (the second horizontal back is a more recent discovery I made a few years back)...

Dan, to answer your questions...

-we assume there are 80 because it says so n back--there may in fact be more than 80 as there were at least 3 different printings of this set (much like the E121 series of 80's multiple printings)

-They are a 1921 issue and are simultaneous with the E121 Series of 80 cards based on the way the positions are written on front (unlike the 1922 E121 Series of 120 set)

-I'm not going to delve too far into the W575-1 issue as that will be addressed more fully in an article I have written and submitted to Lyman for inclusion in a future Old Cardboard article.

-Rhett

The vertical back says that the pictures will be returned if you redeem a full set. I'm guessing that means cancelled, like the George C Millers. Does anyone have one that looks to be cancelled (hole punched, pen cancellation, etc)?

Great info Rhett..........I don't know how they couldn't be classified as E cards since they specifically advertise for Candy and they fall within the generally accepted timeframe for E's versus R's. In other issues where multiple manufacturers existed like E17 & E18 flags and others under the E realm, Burdick carefully listed out the different versions as A) B), etc. He did miss some of the other variations that were more obscure when compiling it and maybe he missed the Witmors specifically. His West Coast connections were apparently weak as there are a number of West Coast candy/chocolate sets for nonsports that weren't included in the ACC.

Rhett, great info (as usual). I was wondering why VCP lists Witmor Candy as 1921 but everywhere else says 1922. It looks like VCP could be correct.

Default Witmor - Walter Johnson & Sam Rice

These 2 cards somehow managed to elude Rhett's fantastic Witmor collection! I just wish one of them had a scarcer back.

Default Add another one to the catalog

Been awhile since I saw this thread but at a local show today, I found this Witmor Vertical card. Condition is obviously rough but rarity makes up for it.
