Legendary W574 Lot

Has anyone done an article on this issue? I am curious as to why there are 2 different type backs found on these. Similar to the 1933 Uncle Jacks with the gray and the cream colored backs. In the 1950s, the Baltimore Esskays did it, 1954 were cream colored backs and 1955 were gray.

The 1941 Goudey Skybirds come in both backs and I believe it is considered that the cream colored of these were printed in the US and the grays were printed in Canada.

Anywho, I need a few out of the Legendary lot if the winner would like to trade.

There was an article in the Spring 2011 issue of the Old Cardboard Magazine about the W574's. It was written by "Old Cardboard Staff"....

The article referenced the Feb 1982 issue of The Trader Speaks. I guess John Spalding wrote an article that appears on pages 3 and 4 of that issue.

By the way.... The article by Lyman offers no reason as to why there were gray and tan colored backs, although he does show an example of each back....

I am not sure of the reasoning but there are several sets that have different card stock and color differences, such as this W572......These 1932 W-unc Chicago cards are printed on different stock too.....no idea why....maybe they were done as tests or after some were run through the presses the stock was changed for a one of many reasons...

You can add W515-1's to the list that had 2 different card stocks. The cream acrds are thin and very brittle (will literally break in your hand if you aren't careful) wheas the "gray" backs are thicker and really sturdy cards

W519/W521 too. There are some issued on a white front that are quite nice while the others are on chipboard that has aged considerably.

Hey Leon, nice red W572, only the 2nd one Ive ever seen.

years ago I had a red one like yours, a blue one and 3-4 of these sepia ones (below). if I remember right they were on a thicker card stock. I got them all from the same person. All of them had very poor images compared to the more common W572
this is the only one I have left from that small group, I call it sepia
