Lots of potential topics for discussion in the recently concluded Mastro Auction. It was probably the biggest/best Memorabilia offering since Halper, so I figured another thread couldn't hurt.
I was shocked at some of the Vintage Glove prices. Here are 5 examples... 1. Fingerless Glove... $33,000. No surprise that advanced collectors would battle hard for this, but $33K? Has to be a record price... http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...erless-Fielder 2. George Sisler Mitt... $2,280. Never seen one approach this level (or even close). These aren't that uncommon. http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...-First-Baseman 3. Pair of Joe DiMaggio Gloves... $4,800. Granted, they're MINT and rare examples, but again, this has to be a record price for 2 DiMaggios. http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...r-(2-Different) 4. Stan Musial with Box... $5,700. Never seen one approach this level. http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...Musial-Fielder 5. Mickey Mantle with Box... $8,400. Another record price? http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...n-Original-Box Glove collectors, please chime in. Would love to hear your thoughts on the prices realized. These went way beyond anything I anticipated. Was condition the driving factor? |

Condition, condition, and condition... throw in some rarity and demand and the prices are not shocking at all.

From a glove collecting prospective, the prices for the Sisler isn't far fetched. His Rawlings gloves are commonly available but the D&M (which features a script endorsement where as the Rawlings does not) is quite rare.
The Musial box that went for over 5K is a little surprising - this box is not rare and the glove wasn't in the best of shape. The Marty Marion box price was a little eye raising as well. It's good to see interest in gloves and hope more people are drawn to the hobby.

Actually thought the Sisler would go for more. Sure there have been a lot of Sisler mitts found, but when you break it down, none compare to this one. Sisler's endorsement contract began in the 1920's and lasted through the late 1940's. Very few models from the 20's exist and fewer still in decent condition. And that's for Rawlings, not D&M. I've only seen two D&M Sislers in 20+ years focusing on gloves and this example is stellar, by far the most desirable. I'm not talking it up because I won it, I didn't.
