On ebay, I saw an auction for a T206 Dahlen printing error, which says the card is missing red. You can see in the pictures the B is missing (or very faded) from his shirt. Is this a legit variation?

My personal experience(have won from him for years) with this seller is that he does not sell Fakes. Front of card looks ok. However, no back shot.

Looks like the B isn't missing though. I have had a card or two where glues used to in a scrap book have removed a particular color. But there is usually a slight ghost version of the origional color.

No issues with the seller - stand up guy and board member. I'm not sure about the variation however so have no opinion.

The last color to be applied to the T206's in the printing process was RED....and quite a few left American Litho.
without Red ink on them. This Dahlen card is an example of this, as not only is the Red "B" missing, but so is the reddish color on his face. Shown here are several other T206's, that have their RED ink application missing.....Cobb, Beckley, Devlin, Kling, Niles, Bill Sweeney, etc., etc. ![]() ![]() Furthermore, I've known this Seller for approx. 20 years; and, he is one of the best in the hobby. That's Dan's listing, right? If so, no worries dealing w/him; he's a 100% legit standup guy.

THere looks to be a very faint trace of the bottom half of the "B" that is mostly missing. Perhaps the run went through with almost no red left.

Yea, I wasn't questioning the seller. Heck, I picked up a nice W516 Mathewson from him a couple of weeks ago. (Thanks, Dan!) I was more curious on what constitutes a legitimate T206 variation. I think there was some talk about a period missing in some card, which may be a new variation, and of course there is the Snodgras variation. I thought this would be most similar to the Snodgras which seemed to be due to a printing issue. However, that card receives a significant premium, and I was wondering why this one wouldn't also? Even though Ted's examples clearly show the Red issue in other cards, it's not as dramatic as the Dahlen example where the B is nearly missing. I'm very new to T206, so I'm just looking to learn something new about it. Thanks! Gary

Actually the error is Nodgrass not Snodgras. These missing color printing freaks aren't really variations like the Doyle and Magie. These are just neat for the collector who likes printer's scraps. Some of them are neat and I think they got popular when the Sweeney NO B was cataloged in Krause. Back in the 1970s when I put my set togather, no one cared about these. Dan.

although not a variation, in the strictest sense, it would be a neat piece to have.
the seller's snoring would not affect this analysis. best, barry |
