I just wanted to post that my long-time friend Steve Gold, with whom I always had dinner at the National at least once a year, lost his battle with cancer the other day.
I will truly miss him greatly and I'm glad we got to do one final dinner at this year's National. Here are some details courtesy of Rich Mueller and Sports Collectors Daily http://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com...a-dealer-dies/ Regards Rich Klein |

The sad part is I didnt even know he was sick.
Its been awhile since I was at AU Sports and went to go there one day at their Skokie location and found that they were not there any more. The Niles location is about 10 miles from where I work and have been meaning to get there but just havnt had a chance to do it yet. I hope they find a way to keep the place open! I used to go to the old place and talk to Audrey. It wasnt unusual to pop in there and while you were talking with her she would get a 10 case delivery from Topps. Audrey would think nothing of asking you to help her move the cases around for her. She was just like a mom who ran a card shop. They will all be missed!! Sad News! |

I was an irregular customer of the Gold's since the late 1970's when they would set up at the old Hillside Holiday Inn shows. When their store opened in Skokie (I think around 1980), I celebrated because the only other card shop in the Chicago area was on the South Side, quite far from Skokie and my home in a nearby suburb. They always had a tremendous inventory of cards and memorabilia. You could get lost in the Skokie shop. I am sorry to hear about Steve's passing and my condolences to the Gold family.

Rich, I too am sorry for your loss. As you may recall, I met and sat next to Steve at the dinner in Baltimore, and we had a great chat. He also was the last one I waived goodbye to when I left the show Sunday. This is surprising and sad news.

It was in the Fall of 1978 at a show at the Prudential Center here in Boston where I met Steve and Audrey Gold. I bought a 1954 Johnston cookie Aaron and a bunch of 206's from them.
After my purchase, they introduced me to Bill Hederson who sold me another Aaron Johnston cookie card plus everything to virtually complete my Topps/Bowman BB sets! It was a great time when I met the Golds and I'll always remember that event. |

I bought my first cards from his mother Audrey in 1979 when she sold cards out of her house. Later I often visited their store and got to know Audrey, Steve and Bruce. They were very nice people. She never used any grades but reserved the phrase "very pretty cards" for the top condition. I moved away from Chicago two years ago but came back to visit in August. I made a point of tracking the store down and visiting with Steve. I never knew he was sick. They were all very nice people and will be missed. God bless his family.

As a card collector also named Steve and with a daughter about Steve's daughter's age, this makes me sad to hear. I wish his family the strength to get through this. RIP, Steve.
