Does anyone have any opinions/information regarding the W554 issue? Looking to find out what the consensus is on rarity, range of available condition and whether the pricing in The Standard Catalog is accurate to those who collect or have collected them. Posting scans if you have them would be appreciated also. Any kind of info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

There was a thread on W554's 3 or 4 months ago... You should be able to find lots of scans of the W554's in that thread... There was also a discussion of the two variations of the W554's....

Thanks for the info. I really have to check the old threads better! One additional question, if they are so common and cheap, where are they? I don't see any for sale anywhere (except for one really expensive one on ebay). Any ideas on current availability (especially graded examples)?

Tony,
Here is a link to the thread I started back in November. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=129791 At the time, I think there were 2 or 3 on ebay. I set up a saved search in the beginning of January and have not seen any new ones listed since then. dj |

While I think The Standard Catalog is fairly accurate with these, the prices are still a bit deceptive. I think that most ballcard collectors don't collect these. Of those that do they are usually satisfied with one, either as a type card or of a favorite player. And then there's a handful of collectors who're after the set of W554's. I think that eventually more type collectors will start chasing these, and a few of those will decide to go after on example of each of the cards.
I have just one.... ![]() ![]() Last edited by FrankWakefield; 01-21-2011 at 05:50 PM. |

I've been chasing the W554's for a few years now (perhaps a few more but I've lost track.....what year are we in again?). They might be plentiful but not in my neighborhood. They appear in an old fashion eBay auction every once in a blue moon (but they do appear). They usually don't sell for much (at least compared to an E103) and as Frank mentioned, that is due to the fact that not many collectors are trying to complete the set.
I really don't need new competition, so if you find another set you want to chase, please don't let me stop you. Since you asked for pictures, here are some of my W554 (okay, it's all of them)......By the way, seven of these came courtesy of Ernest L. Krotz. If so inclined, and since you reminded me, here is the link to my old W554 Ernest L. Krotz thread..... http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...ht=cards+talk: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lovely Day... |
