Without trying to derail Jon's E220 Wambsganss thread, I thought it might be of help to some folks if we posted Bill Wambsganss cards.
Here's an American Caramel E121, series of 80, card. That's not Bill Wambsganss in the image, it is Fritz Coumbe. Coumbe, a left handed pitcher, began in the majors with the Red Sox in 1914, and was traded to Cleveland mid-season. There, he appeared in 145 games, posting a 34-31 record with a 2.83 ERA, 1914 through 1919. He pitched for the Reds in 1920 and 1921. He pitched 10 more years in the minors, retiring after the 1931 season. The autograph came from Jack Smalling's great collection, close to 20 years ago. ![]() Last edited by FrankWakefield; 03-29-2010 at 02:54 PM. |

Frank: I don't believe I have a single card of Wamby's. His playing era spanned a period where there was a dearth of colorful issues. I did snap this photo at the Chicago National in '08 and offer it in lieu of cardboard.

An amazing piece of history, David.
My thinking with this thread was twofold. One thing was I figured it would be helpful to some folks if they could see the various Wambsganss cards, see which ones had the correct photo and which ones didn't, and that would help them with their collecting. Second reason was we need a new thread at the top. |

Frank - thanks for the 'bump'. There is some misinformation out there and just wanted the Net54 guys to clear it up. (I am in the market for a 'cheap' Wambsganss - actual picture/person) So far I've learned that the 1916s and E121s are not him. The E220 (one of my favorites), '17 Boston Store and the Maple Crispette actually show Bill.
I see on eBay a low grade E220 for $450 (wow) and a decent Boston Store example available. Again, thanks Frank! Jon Last edited by jp1216; 03-29-2010 at 04:00 PM. |

Nice cards, Brian. Thanks for posting. Good to see right handed Wamby on cards instead of that lefty Fritz.
W's 1925 Exhibit, which I don't have, shows him at the end of his career, when he was with the Red Sox. So I think the most desirable of the Wambsganss cards are the ones Brian has. The real guy, and in a Cleveland uniform. Anyone interested in Wambsganss, or old cards, MUST get the cd version of Mr. Ritter's, The Glory Of Their Times. Wamby is on there, the entire set is a treasure. If you love the white border tobacco cards, T206s, then you have to listen to those cd's. Davy Jones, Sam Crawford, Hans Lobert, Chief Meyers... it is a treasure. Mr. Ritter did us all one great service when he took to the road to find these guys. And Wamby is on there, for a few minutes.
