What do you think are the top 10-20 cards from the Topps sets from 1970-1975? Assuming grades are all equal of course, call it a PSA 8.
Would the list differ if the cards were graded PSA 9? Thanks - Rob |

Any 1970 or especially 1971 carries a huge premium in a 9 because of the full bleed color borders.

Listed by year, here's a stab at my Top 15, using "Coolness" as the criteria, not dollar value.

Could you clarify what the question is? Top 20 in terms of value if graded high? Top 20 cards that are just quintessential? Top 20 cards that sell well (raw), etc...?? Our just favorite top 20?? Thanks. Not that this will shock anyone, but Nolan Ryan cards especially early ones actually sell very close to book unlike 95% of others...

Shhh. But the 1970 #464 Bench A.S. - well, I've got well over $100. for every PSA 8 you show me. The Aaron A.S. is also quite tough. Centering is BIG issue with both these cards. edited: Maybe over $200. for the Bench.

Al, What does a 71 artist rookie proof look like? Not sure I have seen any, are they sold by Topps vault?

Kevin
I have never seen one in person, just the photo Bob Lemke has in the SCD Big Book ( they have been in the catalog for several years if you have any recent edition). I gather that may be one of ones, and if so, maybe rarer than the Dice Game cards. The 70 Cloth may be singles as well. I know Bob has several, but not sure if anyone knows of any duplicates. Larry may have some, but I am not sure. I at least have personally seen the Dice and Cloths, but not any of the Artists Proofs. But Bob L must have had access for the picture in the catalog Al Last edited by ALR-bishop; 11-09-2009 at 06:25 PM. |

My recollection is that the guy who reported them to me sent photocopies of the complete set. Since no other examples have ever surfaced, at least publicly, I should probably delete the pricing in the "big book" and go with Value Undetermined.

I have the 74 Ryan Deckle in white and grey back, and an uncut proof. I am about 10 cards short of finishing the set in all 3 formats. I bought several of them from you, Murcerfan, some years back.
Fortunately I finished the 71 Moments sets several years ago |

Funny thing, I havent collected Topps cards for many many years. But when I did back in the late 70's-80s cards like the 1972 Garvey, 1972 Carew, Carew in action, 1970 Bench, 1974 McCovey Wash, 1970 Super BPowell were the classic higher value cards. Same with the 1967 BRoby, Seaver, 1966 McCovey, Perry, etc. funny how things change now that we collect slabs
![]() I remember easily getting over $100 for high grade 1972 Carew's in the mid 80's IMO the best card is the 73 Schmidt, high number (last series year), best player of the 70's, often miscut/OC. Last edited by fkw; 11-12-2009 at 11:16 PM. |
