Baseball was a popular topic for cartoon and comic characters in the 20th Century. Here are a few vintage examples of worlds colliding...please share your own!

Hi-
The Mickey Mouse piece and Ruth piece are really cool! How old is the Foxy Grandpa book? I picked this up from an ephemera dealer a few years ago. Although I sold it once, I now have it back. It is dated 1895 and I think the illustrations are very interesting (and disturbing). Alan Elefson [email]aelefson@hotmail.com[/emai |

Wow...that's fantastic stuff, Alan! Really superb...I'm glad you retrieved it. Judge did some really nice things all the way through the teens. Somewhere I've got a 1909 Judge centerspread that shows all the major league mascots in caricature...I'll post a picture of it soon.
Foxy Grandpa was printed in 1908. It's a linen book (oilcloth, I suppose). |

Neat items (and thanks that someone is finally posting about books!) The Smitty book is quite common, but most often found in horrid condition, given its cardboard covers and intended audience. I have seen many, if not most, with crayon markings. It actually does come with a dust jacket, copy pictured below (this is actually my trading dupe--I don't have a scan of the nicer dj ![]() I'm also posting a copy of Red Pepper, while along the theme, is decidedly intended for the adult audience Max ![]() ![]() Last edited by baseballart; 08-28-2009 at 12:01 AM. |

Your Mickey Mouse Magazine is simply superlative. Actually, all of the post are just terrific. I just wish I had something to contribute. But... I now have a new niche in the hobby to start collecting

Here's that 1909 Judge piece I was talking about:
![]() Always kept this framed in my office...and it was always fun to watch visitors trying to guess the team names of a century ago. |

That is a great image! Was it removed from a magazine or is it a supplement? Amazing detail and color either way!
Thanks for sharing! Alan |

Thanks, Alan...it's the centerfold from a Judge issue. It measures 14" x 18". I rarely buy incomplete publications; I sure wish I had the whole magazine! But for all the reasons you cited, there was no way I was going to walk away from that dealer's table without it!
It's proven over time (18 years!) to be one of the most popular display items in my collection with "non-collectors." |
