Posted By: Mac Wubben

I have a t206 piedmont f42 Mathewson(black cap). Curious to know what the estimated population is? 25? 250?

Thanks,

Mac

Mac,
I found and sold one this year. I don't get around much though, so it was the only one I have seen.

So hard to say for individual issues unless you have a spreadsheet and are tracking it ... any help Brian W. ?

My guess would be much closer to 25 than to 250 though for that specific card (and possibly on the under 25 side). P42s are tough overall and for a specific card the pop has gotta be pretty low.

Regards,
S

The Matty (dark cap), along with 5 other T206's are Super-Prints (S-S); and, are found with 20-24 different T-brand backs.
Therefore, finding this Matty (and the other five S-S) with a Piedmont 460 Factory 42 back is not that rare as it is with the
other T206's.

I have (or have had) all six S-S cards with this back.

Here are the 5 other S-S......

Chance (yellow portrait)

Chase (blue portrait)

Chase (dark cap)

Cobb (red portrait)

Evers (batting-yellow sky)

Mac,

Here is some very rough ballparking.

1. There are very roughly 3,000 examples of a typical T206 common extant.

2. As Ted said, Matty (Dark Cap) is a one of the six superprinted subjects. Plus, Matty was an extremely popular player, which would contribute to relative survivability of his cards. So, let's say, for the sake of this calculation, there are 5,000 Matty (Dark Cap) specimens floating around.

3. Now, the Piedmont 42 back appears on something like 0.8% of the subjects with which the back is possible. I forget the exact fractional percentage, but it will do for present purposes.

4. Based on this, it can be guesstimated that there are about 40 examples of Matty (Dark Cap) with Piedmont 42 in circulation. Naturally, the number in VG or better condition would be considerably smaller.

Scot

Note: Edited to revise numbers used in calculation based on survey data.
