Ninth man out? Joe Gedeon
Posted By: Steve M.
While browsing I found that one Joe Gedeon, second baseman for the St. Louis Browns, learned of the 1919 Series fix from friends on the White Sox and bet money on Cincinnati and was banned for life by Landis. He played for Washington in 1913 and 1914; New York Americans in 1916 and 1917; and St. Louis 1918 through 1920. Is Joe the Gedeon appearing in the 1915 Zeenut set? |

That sure makes the 1915 set a little more difficult what with McMullin, Risberg and Williams in there as well. |

BTW- Dickie Kerr was also called the 9th Man Out. Kerr, who was clean and won 2 games for the Sox in the series, was blackballed from baseball by Charles Comiskey in 1921 I believe, and Landis wouldn't do a thing about it. It had nothing to do with the WS, I seem to recall he held out in 1920 (or 21). |

than me gunga din. If I hadn't needed a Z15 for my type set I would have probably passed on it. And with the aquisition of the McMullin I probably would have put him on the B/S/T at some ridiculously low price. |

I think this thread is a terrific example of the wonder of this board -- commentary on a fascinating topic (Black Sox) by experts from around the country. Thanks again to Elliot, Bill, Leon & Brian for all their efforts. |

Can anyone confirm that the Elmer John Gedeon who played for Washington in 1939 and died in 1944 was the son of Elmer Joseph Gedeon who is the subject matter of this thread? |

I thought I was the only person who called Dickie Kerr the Ninth Man Out. I called him that in an ebay auction where I was selling his E122 American Caramel card. My understanding from various stories on the internet is that he went barnstorming in the 1921 or 1922 off-season to make a little extra money. Because of this, he was banned by Landis. He was actually a rookie in 1919, did extremely well during the regular season and won both games he pitched in the Series. There's no question he was clean. He just found a different way than the others to deal with Comiskey's penny pinching, but got the same result. |

there were something like "22 men out"...Landis had a field-day when he first came on as commisioner, banning many players who were linked with gambling and "throwing" games... |

Harry O'Neill was the other major leaguer killed in WW2. He died on Iwo Jima with a few thousand of his buddies. |
