Removing excessive tobacco staining?

Any thoughts on the possibility of removing an excessive amount of tobacco staining from a T206 (or any prewar) card. I have a couple Polar Bear backed cards which have suffered badly .... and would love to know what my options are here.

Also, as collectors would you consider such removal to be altering the card or some other unbearable sin?
