Factory No. 6, 1st District, Middletown, Ohio

Paul Sorg and John Auer began processing cut plug tobacco in Middletown, Ohio, in the late 1870’s. In 1898, Continental Tobacco Company (one of the main holding companies under the American Tobacco Company umbrella) purchased the Middletown plant. In early 1899, Luhrman & Wilburn Tobacco Company of Cincinnati (one of the largest scrap tobacco manufacturers) was purchased by Continental. Continental then moved the Luhrman & Wilburn operations to the Middletown factory. Upon the break-up of ATC in 1912, the plant ownership changed to the P. Lorillard Company, which operated it until 1951.

Someone posted this post card a year or so ago and I hav ebeen searching for it ever since. I too collect Polar Bears due to the fact I grew up in Springboro, Ohio, a small town 10 miles North of Middletown. I greatly appreciate your research and sharing this post card. Where did you find your copy and why did you pick Polar Bears to collect? Didn't you begin your collection after Ted's post on t206 sets to complete? How many cards are you up to?

I found the image of the factory on the web, so unfortunately I don't own the postcard. I started working on the PB T206 subset about two months ago after Ted's post. So far it's been a lot of fun! I'm up to about 90 (mostly F-G), including Demmitt (StL), Speaker, and Young. How 'bout yourself?

Ali - that's because Polar Bear was not some girlie cigarette like Sweet Caporal, Piedmont and the rest. Polar Bear was some manly scrap tobacco!

Barry - these packs are available on eBay every once in a while. Porblem is, most date to the 1920s or later and still usually sell for $400+ (which is not worth it).

My father and I have been working on "the monster" together for five years. We started at the Moeller (I hope that's spelled right) High School Thanksgiving show in Cincy. He bought his first card from Mark Irodenko of Outfield Sportscards. I bought mine, Ed Summers, a few minutes later from Mark. Mark is a class act dealer and we have bought several since. I have about 150 T206's (most are graded vg/ex)and Dad has over 100. We check them off together. I reside in Michigan but am still attached to South Eastern Ohio. I probably only have 30 or so Polar Bears, but try to focus on them when I can. The top of my want list has an SGC 50 PB back Speaker on it. Thanks for asking and enjoy your quest!

So Jon, that pack says Lorillard at the bottom. Does that mean it's from after the ATC breakup?

Do you have one that held a T206?
