I got this from Robert S, at the National. I think he told me what he thought it was but anyone else know, off hand? Teachout only played for the Cardinals in 1932 so I think that might be the year? The cursive stamp on the lower back looks like it says GM Trautman, but I am not sure of that... Thanks in advance...

G.M. Trautman is George Trautman, a minor league executive. That is definitely a facsimile of his signature. He was president of the Columbus Redbirds in the 1933-35 period. Teachout was with that club in the 1933-34 seasons, so chances are this is a minor league issue.

Leon, I have never seen the item before, but it appears as though he has a Rochester Red Wings jersey on. The bottom of the first letter on his chest (which is all you can see) appears to be the bottom of an "R". Teachout was only with that team in 1932.

"R" could also stand for "Redbirds", which is more likely given the 1934 date on the verso, as well as the Trautman connection.

Jodi, you are probably right about that. When I first looked him up I was thinking the Columbus team was till going by the nickname "Senators" but they were definately going by the "Red Birds" at the time, and I believe that is their flying bird emblem as well on his hat.

Well, your item is hand-dated "1934" on the verso! 1934 places Teachout in Columbus.

In cases like this (where things don't seem to add up from a major league standpoint), try consulting SABR's minor league database. It's online somewhere, although the address I have is no longer valid. This leads me to a follow-up question of my own: Does anybody have the new address, or it it down for long-term construction?
