The PSA bumps...

If you had a PSA 7 of a $2k card and thought it was deserving would you try for the 7.5?

Now when I ask that its my belief (opinions vary I know) that when I paid $2k I did so because I thought it was a 'strong' or very nice PSA 7; had it been what I thought was a "weaker" PSA 7 then I probably would not have paid $2k but perhaps $1800 or 1900. So my belief is the card already has a 7 + in its price, but I plan to sell it later in the year and wondered if getting the 7.5 was worth it or not?

i agree with your pricing philosophy. premiums are normally paid for "nicer looking" grades...so i personally don't think a .5 bump will increase the price enough to warrant the time and expense.

Sending in for the possible bump is exactly what PSA is hoping you'll do. I agree with Peter, that re-submitting this one would not be worth the added time and expense. The card matters more than the holder.

If you think it has a really good shot at an upgrade, I would think it is probably worth it. If a 7 sells for 2k and presumably an 8 would sell for around 3.5-4.5k, then I think a 7.5 would probably bring 2.5-3k and thus would be worth the $50 submission.

Since you are going to sell it I would send it in. I would spend the $50 for what I felt was a strong chance for a bump that would add $500+ to the value of my card.


Here is recent VCP on a card I am tracking, 1956 Topps Pirates Team I have in a strong 8 that I'm thinking of sending in for a $15 bump submission-

PSA 8 - $363 Most recent sale / $404 Ave last five sales

PSA 8.5 - $650

PSA 9 - $1738 Most recent sale / $1817 Ave last five sales


This is only a single example but the bump looks worth it here. I also believe there are a lot of buyers who trust what PSA/SGC say a card is graded at and will gladly pay a premium to get a .5 card vs buying what they think is a high grade card and then sending it in too see if it gets the bump.

I hate to seem like I'm flip flopin, but I agree with both Peter & JimB(Whhaat?). I know they both gave somewhat different opinions, but in the end of your life with said card, it probably won't matter.

It all depends on How you sell the Card! If the Card is that Strong, in the end, it will sell itself! Heck, didn't you say that is why you baught it!? If you Auction it off on ebay, then you'll can & need to promote it as a Possible (Bump Up to a) 7.5. If you get it reviewed and they don't Bump it Up, Then It's Still a Very Strong 7 and saying that it "Might Possibly be a 7.5" will be hard to say!(I remain to be honest with my cards, I'll tell you what I did with a card I thought was a possible Bump Up next.)

I thought long and hard about what I should do with a Card I thought had Great Bump Up Potential!

I wanted to have my Cake and it to. So, I ended up sending it to Mastro for them to have PSA Review it(No Cost to Me & 0% Sellers Premium)! I know, Your 1st thought might be, "Will They Have it Reviewed?" Well, I came to the conclusion that it's in Their Best Interests to make sure it gets reviewed. In the end, Mastro will make more if it's in an 8.5 holder vise an 8.

So, Really, it mattered to me to act with All Due Diligence with the card & be comfortable with the outcome. I don't have many high dollar cards & I completely understand where you're comin from.

Ps Oh Yeah, After Mastro had the Card for 3 weeks, I was informed that PSA Reviewed the Card & it's Still in an "8" Holder! & I'm Okay with it......Really...The Card will Sell itself, it's "Still a Very Strong 8"

I recently submitted three strong (well centered, strong corners, etc.) T206 PSA 7 commons under the half-grade service and none of them got bumped. All told, I sent in 13 vintage cards under the half-grade service that I thought were deserving of a bump and exactly one got the nod [T206 Young (Portrait) from PSA 4 to 4.5]. I would guess that your chance of getting a bump on your PSA 7 is probably about 3-5%. So multiply the PSA grading fees (plus shipping costs) by about 20-30X and compare that with the increase in FMV that you would experience from a bump to PSA 7.5. If the increase in FMV would excceed 20-30X the fees (plus costs) then submit it. Otherwise refrain.
