M101-1 Sporting News Supplement Question???

Can some of you chime in who have knowledge of the M101-1 Sporting News Supplements
and tell me if this set was possibly reprinted at some point in time.
I've come across some that look different than the ones shown on "The Old Cardboard"
website.
The ones I'm inquiring about are smaller than 10"x13" which I believe was standard.
These measure 8-3/4x11. Also can the originals be found with both 1899 & 1900 printed in
the upper right portion of the supplement or were all printed showing just the numbers
"99" for 1899 only.
These have a mixture of both dates. Some have the number "99" which I know stands for
1899 but some have the year "1900" printed in full without the abbreviation of "00".
Did they actually come with two different dates printed on them.
Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like you are looking at two distinct, but related issues. The 8.75 x 11 pictures are M101-1 Sporting News pictures. The 10 x 13 (or a little smaller) pictures are National Copperplate. The National Copperplates were issued about a year earlier than the Sporting News pictures. There is some overlap in players in the two sets, but not complete overlap.

The easiest way to tell the difference is that the Sporting News pictures actually say "The Sporting News" at the top, while the National Copperplates don't. I believe (but I'm not sure) that some of the Sporting News pictures actually have a credit in the photo to National Copperplate -- so don't rely on that as the distinguishing characteristic.

I just noticed the Standard catalog lists the Sporting News pictures as being 10 x 13. This is a mistake that hopefully they'll fix soon.

So Paul or anyone else out there, do the M101-1 supplements that measure 8-3/4"x11"
have a slight glossy look to them or do they have a flat matte finish??

The only one I still have doesn't look particularly glossy. And I don't remember the others that I owned in the past having a glossy finish. But they are 100 years old, so it could have lost some gloss with age. Hopefully others with larger collections of these can chime in.

Tony, the only one that I have (now shown on the Old Cardboard website at http://www.oldcardboard.com/m/m101-1/m101-1.asp?cardsetID=961) does have a slightly glossy sheen. I am not aware of any reprints of these supplements. --Lyman

First of all, I have a good number of the series and they are all 8 3/4 x 11.

As for the date question, all of my 1899 players have '99 in the date field.

In the 1900 issues, the date is "1900",

Some other variations occur within the issue:

Between May 5 and 12, 1900, the following changes occur:

The font of "The Sporting News" in the heading changes.
The font and size of the the player, postion, team information at the bottom changes. (As a consequence, the photo frames slightly higher).

There are some other variations earlier in the issue, such as double line framing on some of the subjects (Nichols and Griffin, for sure).

Also, The print color of some of the issues are a rusty brown or black. All issues (that I have) starting with May 12, 1900 and later are black.
