Jason LAll,
In my continuing quest for the next diversion, I now pen my next entry in the rarely-advertised, yet hotly-contested, Most Irreverent Post Competition. A recent/concurrent thread asking for posts of our favorite cards contained a comment that got me thinking (Thanks Keith)...so here's my question/request:
What other vintage cards contain depictions or pictures of dogs?
Here's my entry, which dovetails nicely with the other Fave thread, as this one also happens to be my current favorite card! Ah the Symmetry...the Symbiosis!
For those who don't know (and I had to do some homework to find out), the dog pictured front and center is sitting in front of his owner, Jack Graney. From what I have read, Jack was a good friend of Shoeless Joe, and had some notable distinctions, such as: he was the first major league hitter to face Babe Ruth as a pitcher, he was the first one to think up the idea of having a team use numbered uniforms (it was scrapped quickly, and then caught on for good with the Yanks), and he was the first ex-major leaguer to become a broadcaster (so we have him to thank for Tim McCarver).
The dog was a popular mascot for the team, and apparently developed into a fan favorite for the tricks he would perform before games both at home and on the road. The dog's name was Larry, and he passed away on July 25, 1917.
