I have all of Halberstam's baseball books....I especially enjoyed "Teammates" as the Red Sox are my favorite team. Terribly sad news.

"Summer of '49" is one of my all time favorite baseball books, "The Fifties" is one of my top 5 books of all time. Sad.
Vonnegut, Kapuczinski, and now Halberstam. Great authors seem to be biting the dust recently.

Well I'd just had one glass of wine with supper, and this post has sobered me right up....

Summer of 49 is a really good baseball book. And October 1964 was a fantastic baseball book, about a lot more than just baseball. Mr. Halberstam was an insightful man, dignified... he will be missed. The pool of baseball writing talent has just shallowed considerably.

He's the only person that could make politics interesting. I really enjoyed the Best and the Brightest. I'm still reading Playing for Keeps, his book about Michael Jordan. Mr. Halberstam was a prolific and gifted writer.

One sign of a great writer is that he can make you personally nostalgic for a time before you were born.
Though he wrote of far more serious topics, "Summer of '49" made me feel like I was there.

I was a 10-year old kid in 1949 and an avid Yankees fan (Phil Rizzuto was my neighbor 2 blocks away).
I always prided myself in remembering many events of that great season in NY. When I read Halberstam's
book, I was overjoyed, as he reminded me of many of the great events I had forgotten. It was a virtual
"flashback" to my youth.

May his Spirit be with God.

Like many here, I was saddened by the loss of David Halberstam. He was a tremendous journalist and a pretty fair writer. While I enjoyed 'Summer of '49', I preferred 'October 1964'. My favorite Halberstam book was 'Breaks of the Game', his account of a season with the Portland Trailblazers back in the Walton years.

He seemed to be a reporter at heart. His writing was simple and to the point. For truly great baseball writing I turn to Roger Angell. For good research and solid writing, Halberstam was one of the best. He will be missed. My prayers go out to his family and to the young man who was driving him when the accident occurred.
