I rarely post in the pickup threads because I seldom have anything to contribute except the odd T206 common in low grade. This card is low grade too, but I had to share my first Cobb. The Cobb red background has to be my favorite T206. I love the way the red background contrasts the grey Detroit uniform and Cobb's steely blue eyes.

No back damage (unless you count the initials ETH written in blue ink). There are a couple creases that don't show well on the scan, one across the chest and one at the top of Cobb's head. On the plus side, the registration and color are great.

Mr. Cobb will fit right in with my fledgling T206 collection.

Jim - that is a fantastic looking cobb for the grade. Probably stands a chance at a 20 if you sent it to sgc (not much of a bump, but the black border on the slab will really make that card stand out and look even better than it already does).

The Boston Sunday cover is the third I've seen with the same image (I have Denver and St. Louis)

The painting was also used for the cover of Johnson of Lansing by Hawley Williams (William Heyliger)

Hi Max:

Thanks for the information. It's a nice example for me since I grew up 45 minutes from Boston. I have seen others over the years that were either priced extremely high or had damage or that I lost to a late snipe.

In this case, luck was with me....I was the only bidder...and won the item for $19.99. It should look nice next to the 2 Saturday Evening Post covers I have that also feature catchers.

cat, those are not wagner's rookie card! you are getting out of focus, you should be looking for his e107...

here's a poor man's wagner, a young i used to own, and a RARE e98 brown front overprint. jimb with his e93 brown ghost print, and me with my e98 brown OP . one of my favorite caramel poses, with big luscious borders that just won't quit!

The e103 really has a pretty sweet front. It was in Barry's auction, but I traded for and recieved it from the guy who bought it in Barry's auction. It was consigned to Barry by one our more prestigious board members (I believe).

steve, it's a psa3...typical VG card rounded corners no crease/wrinkle. one of my very first prewar cards was a nice e93 wagner so i've always been sentimental about it.

darren, the '88 fleer stuff was a little before my time (grace/alomar/maddux/glavine rc's etc). if you wanna talk 89-90 stuff i'm all ear

jeff it's from the latest mile high auction. it's a psa5, i agree with the description that it looks NRMT but the front printing prolly dropped the grade down.

I don't know how I missed that one. That's some 5. It's not a print defect and even if it were, how can that get knocked down to a 5? I'd love to see what SGC would do with that one. Great card.

Please give us the low down on the N172s! Nice grouping of cards John, did you really find them as you described? 3 1887s, a pair of 1888s, & a pair of 1889s. Give us more details, it's hard to make out all the names. Nice Watkins!

Joe, the players are Burdock,Watkins,Murray,Scrappy Carroll,Bastian,Farrar and Dwyer. I figured a Detroit collector like yourself would love the Watkins.

I was at an estate sale and decided to go to the attic to look for cards since thats where they always are,and i started knocking down walls and inside one was the guy who was supposedly deceased and he handed me the cards in exchange for keeping his secret safe.He had some tax problems or something thats why i cant devulge anymore of the story

The Ruth is a 1933 Blue Bird. They are rare, & I think very cool. I scanned it with a piece of cardboard behind it. It was the closest thing handy. My scanner kept cropping the edges without it. Maybe I should read the directions.

Thanks Jason - in fact, your purchase did help fund the cobb - and since I was able to pick it up raw at a good price, it contributed to a larger percentage than you might otherwise have thought.

I think I may have found a way to "add" significant cards to my collection! - I will simply buy cheaper cards in my price range to fill out my collecting needs from Board members who collect high end cards using the proceeds from my purchases!...that way, they're sort of mine too...in an extremely loose manner of speaking...
I know,... it's sad.
but that's just the the way it's gotta be.
especially since I just blew my first few months' budget on a "gotta have it" (I think we've discussed these before!) that came out of nowhere...a high end authenticated, graded GU bat of Kirby Puckett's with provenance...oh well....what's that French phrase?
