1800s photo? Info appreciated

I picked up this photo on eBay.

The listing said 1800s or turn of the century. What do you think?

Also, it looks as though this is some sort of photographer's proof and not the actual 'final product' photo...

Around the edges you can see that the photo image area sort of sits on a brown background.
And the number 38 has me thinking it could be a proof as well.

Any info or opinion would be appreciated.

You can date the photo somewhat by the shape of the home plate. Home plate was a Diamond Shape, just like the field, until the year 1900 when the shape was changed to the pentagon we have today. That means it would have to be a 19th century photo.

What about the idea that maybe this is some sort of photographer's proof?
(background color around image area and the number 38)?
