Just last night I was considering picking up a Dormand postcard of him (with an ad for his gas station in Arkansas!) on eBay. The next moment, the card was gone. Then I wake up and learn Sain has passed. I never saw him pitch, but from looking at his stats, it is clear he and Spahn formed one of the best one-two punches of any era ... unfortunately, injuries slowed him down after about four outstanding seasons. Also, Leo Mazzone called him his mentor, and Jim Bouton said he should be in the Hall of Fame as a pitching coach ...

One of the few major leaguers I have had the good fortune to meet. He certainly did not disappoint. He even gave me a couple of auto'd pics as well. Great man. RIP

A four time 20 game winner, Sain had a career batting average of .245 and struck out just 20 times in 744 at bats. Not bad for a pitcher.

20 Ks in 700+ ABs?
Think about it. This guy should hit second in the lineup. He can advance the runner.

By comparison, Koufax struck out over 350 times in an equal number of at bats, and hit under .100. That is a liability.

In 1946, Sain won 20 games, and, as a batter, didn't strike out the entire season. Could this be a record? Can anyone name another hitter who had more at bats without a strikeout in a season?
