top 5 hottest pre-war cards, in your own opinion

checking ebay and this board's b/s/t, it seems that there are a lot of different cards available with the seller yelling "this cards on fire" or "hottest card on the market" etc, etc, etc...so i ask in your own opinion what do you think are the top 5 hottest cards to own right now? but lets stay under $2500. i think this figure is pretty safe for most collectors, since not everyone can afford the T206 wagner or plank or even the 1914 joe jackson in any grade. no special order is needed.

1. t206 ty cobbs
2. t206 walter johnsons
3. croft backs
4. old judges
5. e93

2. Green Portrait Cobb
3. E90-1 - especially Cobb & Jackson ( I know I'm pushing the $2500 limit with this one ) .
4. E103- especially Wagner & Cobb
5. E93 & E95 sets (tie)

Great question for a thread. I think there are several ways to look at this question. My way of looking at it would be "what would get the most attention, for vintage baseball cards, under $2500, on ebay?" Here are some thoughts...and in NO particular order

1. E94 with overprint (if one came up, besides a Blomes one, it would get enormous attention)

2. T206 common in PSA 8.....I "think" some would be under $2500...those whacky registry guys

3. Kalamazoo Bat of a common...but known player...with ad back...

4. E90-3 (wow, those things go crazy in a 40 or above)

5. T210's series 8 (oh wait, that was 3-6 months ago )

This will be interesting....

A better question is finding five that aren't hot right now. I'd say 1939 Play Ball is about the only one that I can think of and maybe some of the black & white 1920's American Caramel cards as well.

Some of these probably exceed the $2500 limit by 1-2k but I think that these cards are truly going nuts right now (when they can be found):

1. T222 Fatima Grover Alexander (though I agree with Scot that all Grover's are hot right now);

Tougher 19th Century cards have been hot and selling for incredible prices. But easier sets like N28, N29 and Old Judge have been very cold.

that was me about the old judges...i should of clarified that it pertains to certain players...maybe it's just me but i've only picked up 1 out of the last 20 or so I've bid on and thats because it was on the top of my want list.

and i didnt say T216s because i've been kind of a whore lately and picked up about 7-8 and didnt want any added compitition

Hot (no particular order - lower grades to stay under 2.5K):

T206 Cobb Red and Green
T3 esp HOF, but commons too
Any pre-1915 or so E Card
Turn of the century - Mayos and E107 B-W
N28 Annie Oakley (just ask Toby! lol - but he's right)

Not Hot:

M101-4/M101-5 (Not counting tough backs)
T207
T205
E cards after 1915 or WWI or so.

Of course, the not hots are for mid to low grade, but do include slabbed cards. I might be wrong on that last one - I don't follow post WWI that closely - but it seems that they are still very reasonable.

Goudey Ruth yellow background
T3's PSA graded in the 5-6 range
M116, E103 Wagner and any other with his portrait

Unfortunately I don't have any of the above, but I will pick them all up when they cool down and I can buy them for pennies on the dollar . . . yeah, right.

couple different ways to look at "HOT"

Some are listing commonly seen cards as "Hot" (ie. T206 Cobb, Young, etc.) but these are not breaking records or "Jumping" in value.


"Hot" to me are cards that bring many times more than book value, when they are available (if ever).


my list off the top of my head.......

1924 Crescent Ice Cream (any)
1890's N360 with or w/o schedule on back
"E" Caramel cards of Young, Mathewson, Lajoie, Joss, etc.
T211, T213-3, T216, D304, D310, D322
1914 E145-1 Mathewson
unusual type cards ie. Uncle Jacks, Base-Ball Bats, Orange Borders, Middy Bread, Leader Novelty, etc.

How ironic it is that about 2 million Americans have given their lives, so that these two morons, have, what they would say, is their right to burn the American Flag. Out of all the counties on Earth, how many of them would have taken these two clowns out behind the stadium, and shot them on the spot ? Last week I sold two grade 8, 206's (commons) for about $2,500 each. I paid $135 for each of them back in about 1995. I would say that would make them hot. Though I didn't want to part with them, who knows if they will continue to stay red hot. That makes only four cards in total that I have ever sold.

I have to agree that's much harder to list 5 sets or cards that are not hot. 39 PBs defiantely get no respect, which is fine with me. Let's me get a lot players for player set cheap.
