Just received my first Frank Nagy Collection card today in the mail, and being a huge Christy Mathewson fan -- my first T206 was a White Capped Matty -- I was very excited to receive this beauty. Given the imminent article about M116 cards being penned by other on this Board, I thought it was a good idea to pick up a couple of them while the getting was still (relatively) good!

Anyway, anybody else got any Nagy cards to show and tell?

Would the Nagy name on SGC holder bring more money to the value of the card?

I am not sure why these didn't get the Nagy name on the SGC flip, but these four are from Nagy's 1909 Obak near-set in the last Mastro...

That is a topic that has come up at various times on the Board. Some people don't care who owned it before them. But some people think it adds to a card's provenance. Basically, since some people think it is neat, it may add a little gloss to the value of the card. I certainly think the Nagy name is pretty special, but don't really care about some of the other names on holders out there (e.g., Mr. X).

I am glad the Obaks didn't get the Nagy name on the flip -- I can track the provenance thru the cert numbers. I prefer all the flips to be the same. Here are a couple other Nagy Obaks on the way to my house (thanks Jamie!)...

Hey Brian, as I recall the 1909 Obaks weren't in the Nagy section. The 1910 and 1911 ones were, but not the 1909 ones. I don't know if this was an oversight on the part of Mastro or that they weren't really his.

I just assumed that all three years were Nagy... I was paying more attention to the 1911 lot until the final night, so maybe that is why I was confused.

I don't think it is necessarily a bad assumption that the 1909s are from the Nagy collection as it would seem odd that he would have sets of 1910 and 1911 and nothing from 1909. Especially when the 1909s are the prettiest .

Does anyone know if there will be another Nagy installment, or was December everything?

i agree with you about not really caring who owned the card before me but what if it was a big, big name like...the McNall/Gretzky Honus Wagner??

are the truest words I've heard you say this week.

As I said in a previous Thread, for more than 10 years I acquired many very
beautiful cards from Frank. Of course, it was way before grading was in vogue;
nevertheless, I have a special attachment to those cards. For example, the
1st Series of 1949 LEAF BB cards in my set are all from Frank. And really,
I could "shave" with them.....they are unbelievably sharp.

And, even though I have parted with some of my pre-War sets, I have kept the
cards in these sets that I did acquire from Frank....Most of all, I have saved all
the neat personal notes from Frank that he included with the cards he sent me
all those years.

One of the wonderful aspects of baseball cards are the memories and attachments associated with them. Looking at a card can help us feel closer to a time, a place, or person. I will never ever give up my 1981 Topps Manny Sanguillen in Poor condition. It was the first card my dad ever bought for me at a flea market for 25cents when I was 9. I used to look at that card for hours. I think the same goes true for those who knew Frank Nagy. For those who knew him or of him, it is a nice sentiment and evokes fond memories. However, it is necessary for us to place a proper perspective on these things. All cards are on temporary loan to us, at some point they will outlive us and go on to other hands. It's a nice token to think who they came from, but in the end, dozens of other collectors will have the cards we can be so posessive over in the future. It really doesn't matter who had the card before us, but how we will share the hobby, our collection, and ourselves with collectors to come.
