Gentleman and ladies (based on percentages, not etiquette),

Another member asked me on the first card in this grouping why I didn't post this card on the main forum after posting it in the Pre-WWI forum in B/S/T. There was no reason. I also am posting four additional cards with the same question-does anyone else have cards from these sets? In the other forum, I was interested in buying. In this forum, I'm just curious.

Here is a scan of another one slightly different from the 2 sets pictured so far. It has been called a ca.1917 M-Unc. Sporting News., Ive seen 3-4 diff.



The handcut set with the Jackson, Rucker, etc. is cataloged in the 2006 SCD as 1915 W-Unc. Strip Cards, 15 known. Used to see them on eBay from time to time, but none recently.

The Hoffman type, Ive seen a Mack from the same set on eBay, but that was years ago, and I lost the scan. I believe this type is the scarces of the 3 sets pictured so far.

the Schalk indeed is from 1917, and it should be classified as a Mendelsohn rather than Sporting News, for those who get into that kind of thing. I am curious to know which others from that set you have seen.

As for the Hofman, Brian thinks it is a 1911 Sporting News, and I would like to know how that was determined. I concede that the photo is the same used in his m101-2 supplement the preceding year, as I own that one, but we all know photos were re-used, often over a period of years. I believe it odd that the year of the card would be stated as it is--people receiving the card already knew what year it was, and other than mag/newspaper supplements and the occasional copyright reference (and maybe the "19.. Champs" type of remark), I do not recall a set stating the year in this fashion. Brian, you state that you researched the back stamp and confirmed a sporting news origin--how is that?

What is known of the 1917 Mendelsohn set are very cool looking cards. The Mathewson has to be one of his best cards out there, please post a scan if you can Ryan .

In November 2003, I looked on the internet to see if I could find anything on Louis Plamondon to see why such a stamp would be on the back of a card. I used Yahoo and Google for my search and found on one of them-I apologize because I do not remember which-beyond a Louis Plamandon being a one-time Canadian PM, a short description of the card set indicating this information. I also recall this stamp being on the Mack which was offered on eBay. Right now I am checking both Yahoo and Google and if and when I find anything, I will post it. The last thing I need is a "Loch Ness Monster" or "Bigfoot" mystery developing around this card. Obviously, with my scan, the sighting is there for everyone to see.
