O/T Tipping the Mailman for getting our vintage cards to use safely

I been wondering over the past couple of days how to show my gratitude to the local mailman for delivering 40+ packages to me this year of vintage cards, without once making me sweat b/c a package was delivered to the wrong house. The mailman is fully aware of the contents of my packages and has even gone out of his way in bad weather to make sure they were delivered to me dry and unharmed while on his route.

I was wondering if anyone on the board tips their mailman at the end of the year b/c the mailman does a great job at delivering these old cards to us safely? Anyone have an idea what kind of tip to leave?

AHHHH, alas something on this board i can actually comment on with any sort of intelligence.

Tipping your mailman, is like anything else you tip for ...if you feel he/she is deserving. I am a letter carrier and i get tips around Christmas from customers. These range from just a card to monetary gifts to baked goods to a prime rib roast from a butcher on my route. ( the prime rib was my best tip by far!! )

On how much you wanna give is all up to you. Depending on the means i know carriers who have received anywhere from $50 to $100 from a single family ( in some nicer neighborhoods in town) and some have had a business give upto $400 !!!! but for the most part i see $10 - $20 tips.

One thing is true, if i do receive a tip from a customer it does make me wanna do more. whether that is trudging through snow or making sure packages are safe, secure, not wet, etc. And i remember every house on my route that tips all year long and they will get a better effort. I will go around there houses to back doors, deliver there mail to different spots if box is blocked somehow. Climb through the snow, like this last Friday when we got hit in town with about 1.5 ft in like 3 hours and the plows blocked basically every house. It really shouldn't matter i guess we all should do the best we can at any job but the almighty buck still rules this world!

My mail carrier collects cards also. I usually give him a card for Christmas.

in most states mail deliverers are NOT allowed to receive money from people. Give him anything but money as he may have to refuse it. There were situations were mail carriers sadly got in trouble for this very thing.

My regular mailman, John, smartly carries dog treats. When on a walk, one of my dogs can see the mailman blocks away and starts pulling hard. Quite the dissapointment for a little doggie when it turns out to be a different mailman who doesn't carry treats.

because he has the baseball game playing softly on his portable--don't think I ever noticed whether it's Giants or As.

Unlike UPS or FedEx, when the package says someone has to sign for it, he always gets a sig, or leaves a note in the box.

i used to carry the treats but i don't have many dogs on the route anymore. Last year when 2 customers tipped me i gave them a thank you card and something for the their dogs, one got a huge bone and the other likes playing with tennis balls so i got him a sleeve of Penn's.

As for collecting cash...B.C. no letter carrier is "supposed" to take in by rule i believe, some places say nothing over $10, no booze,etc . but if someone was to get in trouble for this 1. Their boss is an ass. 2. how bad of a grinch do you have to be to do that?

I know we take a beating here quite a bit, but remember we don't set the rates.. we just deliver
