Need advice on a Lou G. card

I'm not an avid collector but among my few cards I have a 1934 Lou Gehrig card from Goudey Gum co. in great condition, in plastic and encased in glass.

I'm wondering what the value may be for this particular card.

Assuming it is unaltered and not a reproduction, anywhere from $500 - $5,000. Which number is it? He had two cards in that set. Also, when you say that it is "in plastic and encased in glass", hopefully you don't mean like one of those novelties you buy that has a real tarantula in a glob of plexiglass. That would hurt its value immensely. Scan it for us to see.

Like I said, I'm not a collector so I guess it's the plexiglass you are thinking of. It's thick and screwed on all corners.

The card no. is 37 from the 1934 series. Sorry I don't have a digital.

What collectors guide would you suggest I refer to get appraisals on cards?

The first thing you need to do is determine if it is real. A guide won't do that. Then if it is real, I would suggest sending it in to a reputable grading company. SGC would be your best bet because they don't require a membership. Or, you can just send it in to them to be graded. They will determine the authenticity as well as slab it and assign a numerical grade if it is real. If it's fake or altered, you will only be out $20 or so. If it's real but altered, it still may have $100-$300 of value. Go to http://sgccard.com/ and look at the drop-down menu under "SUBMIT".

The financial value of the card is dependant on its originality, and there are many more reprints out there than originals. You have to first determine if your card is original or reprint before you can determine value.

...and you have to bear with me 'cause when it comes to the collecting procedure I'm clueless.

I'm asking for my husband who is now telling me the card is slabbed. This is how he received the card when it was traded to him for some hunting merchandise when he owned a military surplus store years ago. So not much invested in it.

It is "slabbed", but not by a third party grading company. It is only in a protective holder, so at this point it's provenance still comes into question. Send it into SGC. Better to find out now what you have than to face potential heartbreak later.
