Is there a list, official or unofficial, of the scarcity order of SL's? If not, can anyone hazard a guess of the 5-10 easiest to acquire and hardest?

The easiest to find So. Lgr. from the T206 set has to be
Thebo (Waco). I find him all the time. But, I don't really
understand why ?

Now, it's been quite a few years since I completed my T206
set (minus Plank & Wagner); but, the last card I needed was
Breitenstein (New Orleans). So, he is certainly my candidate
for one of the 5 "tougher" So. Leaguers in the set.

...for me is the one I see the most. I've also seen a few more Helms than others. I am not sure which ones are the hardest since I basically stopped looking for them once I got them all at about the same time.

Here is a "top 20" scarcity ranking for southern leaguers compiled based on a 14,000+ card eBay survey I conducted between 2003 and 2005:

18T. Stark

The PSA pop report tells a slightly different story.

Note that Stark is the only Texas League subject in the top 20--and he barely cracked the list. The reason the six TL subjects are generally easier than the 42 Southern Association, South Atlantic League and Virginia League subjects is that the TL subjects experienced a longer print with the Piedmont 350 back. This is apparently because the TL subjects were introduced later in the T206 production process and their print continued after the print of the SA, SAL and VL had stopped. (Note that the TL subjects are not available with the Brown Hindu back that is known to have been introduced early in the T206 production process, whereas the SA, SAL and VL subjects are available with that early back type.)

There are two VLers that buck the general scarcity trend: Westlake and King, both of the Danville club. They are the most common of all southern leaguers according to my survey and the PSA pop report. I have no idea why.

I'd say that i'd be inclined to agree with that....it took me freakin forever to find my viola (violat)... but i bought this raw for 35 bucks!

Sid Smith (Atlanta) is the tough one--not Carlos Smith (Shreveport). Carlos is a Texas League subject (which is kind of strange since isn't Shreveport in Louisiana ???) Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for posting the results from your survey on the SL'ers.

I was wondering if you had any updates on the difficult/unchecked 350 backs that you posted about awhile back. A Ganley 350 Piedmont was on ebay about a month ago, but I believe that it had already been crossed off the list. I have seen the Keeler portrait twice in Piedmont 350 and once in SC since I first saw the list. Have you, or anyone else made any progress regarding those 350's?

I'm only missing Revelle for completion of the near set (-5). One just sold on ebay, $380 for SCG 60. Maaybe next time. Sid Smith took me a long time, too.

Otey was my last one. Revelle was late on the list. The Violat I had early but in poor shape, took a while to upgrade. I needed to upgrade my Hickman and that was a pain in the ass.

You're right about Ganley and Keeler (Portrait)--they are possible with a 350 back. By the conclusion of my survey, there were eight subjects conventionally thought possible with both 150 and 350 that I was unable to confirm with 350. These were: Ames (Hands at Chest), Doyle (Throwing), Ewing, Jones (St. Louis), Lindaman, Lumley, Lundgren (Chicago) and Schulte (Front View). I suspect some of these eight are possible with 350 but are just more difficult; others may really not be possible with 350.

There were also some subjects conventionally thought available with both 350 and 460 that I was unable to confirm with 350. Similarly, there were some thought possible with both 350 and 460 that I never saw with 460. For reasons too lengthy to get into in this email (I can send you background information off-line if you want), I'm pretty confident that the following combinations previously thought possible are actually IMPOSSIBLE:

Abbaticchio (Blue Sleeves) with 350
Bender (With Trees) with 460
Fiene (Portrait) with 460
Fiene (Throwing) with 460
Latham with 350
Overall (Hands at Waist) with 350
Schaefer (Washington) with 350
L. Tannehill (No “L.” on Front) with 350
Tinker (Bat On) with 350
