Think I just bought an SGC boo-boo
Posted By: warshawlaw
I just got the N174 OJ card I won a week or two ago on ebay. It is graded 40 by SGC, with a screwed up back. That's not the issue, though, since the front picture is quite sharp. The problem is that the card has a very pronounced taper on the right side. I'd say (with benefit of a ruler) the card tapers from 3.5mm wide at the bottom to 1.5mm wide at the top. It was the first thing I noticed when I got the card. The card edges and corners are uniformly aged, so I think the card was trimmed a long time ago. |

If I am not mistaking a lot of 19th century cards were hand cut. I think SGC will take that into consideration, as they did the one I just posted on the "type collecting" thread, and go ahead and grade them. I have seen Kalamazoo's the same way...as long as they have the old "crater" look, on the wavy edge, then they will slab them a lot of times....AND before everyone jumps on the bandwagon that I don't have a clue what I am talking about I do have a little experience in this area... Send me a scan to my email if you get a chance. I would like to see it...regards..... |

Sounds like it may be a miscut or diamond cut unless it was trimmed in it's era for non-compensatory reasons.. |

Adam - if you like the card you shouldn't worry about it. I have a Brookly outdoor pose that is VERY thin, but obviously not trimmed. I saw a very similar one the other night on ebay that was slabbed. |

I had that on my watch list. Those are hard to find in any grade. I'll give you $150 for it. |

I mean similar to the WW/Goudey 1933/4 in the sense that the T218 set may have been issued in Canada with the same fronts but different backs? |

Imperial Tobacco of Canada issued them. They are worth several times their T218 counterparts. |
