No one has fessed up yet to being a big winner in the Mastro auction. I can't believe everybody from the board got shut out. Come on, let's hear the good (and bad) news.

P.S. If any of you was the winner of lot #1115 - the T210 Old Mills - if it contains either a Series 5 (Carolina Association) Lave Cross or a Series 8 (Southern Association) Eugene Demontreville and you'd like to part with either of them, I'd be interested in taking a look.

This was the first Mastro auction where I did what I considered "serious bidding" on tobacco and caramel lots, but others were more serious. I guess some collector/investors must have bought those e95 and e96 lots to put away until the value rises.

The t206 and t205 lots though are an enigma, I just don't understand those prices - even a retail internet business would have difficulty turning those over at a profit, and I can't imagine a collector wanting all the cards in some of those big lots. I would love some enlightenment here, as I did actually want to win something!

Well, I actually did win one of the auctions -- the SGC T202 lot of 24. I would rather have won the PSA T202 lot of 42 but it got way out of control. Once you figure in Buyer's fee (and state sales Tax in my case!!) I don't see where too many of the lots could be profitable to sell...
If anyone know who won the T202 PSA lot of 42 cards I would like to contact them to trade/buy a few of the cards (including the dupes).

Meanwhile I will have several extra attractive T202s if anyone is interested contact me .....

...when the auction opened, and I saw the Matty items there, and almost zero in my bank account, the only thing I envisioned was the end of the world. Man, there was some good, rare Matty stuff there. Congrats to the winners, but (no offense intended) I HATE YOU! LOL...

which included the Matty Memorial item - problem was that I don't have a firm grasp of prices on those items, so I finally gave up. The other Matty items were very cool, but VERY pricey as well. Again, no idea as to worth on most of them.

I don't collect those, but that sure was a sweet lot - congrats.

If any of you won the e95 lot and want to sell/trade the Cobb, let me know...or the Brown from the e96 lot.

I would brag about everything I won, but fear that Doug would post pointing out that I was making it up and didn't actually win the stuff.

As a non-card specialist (meaning I specialize in everything in the world except cards), I save myself a lot of frustration as the card prices are often out of sight.

My first Mastro auction and overall it was fun. Didn't know that if there's one extended bid all the lots continue. Crazy I thought the auctions would end 10-11 pst max. That blue "Extended" was there forever.

I watched both nights come to a close with Day 1 ending slightly past 4am CST and Day 2 ending just before 6:10am CST. Some observations:

Lot 373 - e94 Cobb w/ overprint back. I was shocked this card didn't do much better. This card came out of a Teletrade auction over a year ago, so to those naysayers who say there are no deals in Teletrade...

Lot 382 - m101-5 JJ PSA 8oc. This infamous card is back in the spotlight! It was in a prior Mastro auction, where it did much better and it was also on eBay in which BRSZ was the seller and BRSZ was the winning bidder!

Lot 387 - Ruth lot. I punched the $3076 bid late and was outbid shortly after. Another bid came in and it realized a healthy $4281.

Lot 391 - '33 Ruth / Gehrig lot. A slight discount over what eBay brings, still a nice grouping.

Lot 683 - No comment!

Lot 1112 - e95 set. I thought this did quite well. One has to wonder how long the e-cards can sustain the levels they have been bringing.

Lot 1117 - e96 set. This did well.

Lot 1119 - "E" card collection. I was annihilated on this lot and still cannot believe how well this did.

Lot 1126 - '20's "e" card collection. I had thoughts of winning this just for the e220 Ruth, since my copy STILL has not been returned to me. This Ruth was a better copy than the one I had.

Lot 1131 - 1928 Ruths. I was hoping this would have been a sleeper lot, but it didn't turn out that way. At that level, I should consign my #1 PSA 7 copy.

Lot 1133 - '30's lot. The $19,478 bid came in at about 3:30am and a few minutes later, it was topped. With the juice, it realized $24,640.

Lot 1388 - e102 lot. Perhaps people forgot about this? At any rate, my bid held and this was one of the 6 lots I won.

Lot 1389 - e95 Cobb PSA 7. This card realized about 15% higher than SCP got for their PSA 7 copy.

Lot 1412 - T202 PSA collection. Unreal!

Lot 1421 - 1915 CJ Bodie PSA 9. It sold for a little over $3300. With the CJ 8's tanking, that's an awesome price.

Lot 1422 - e300 Cobb PSA 7. On the closing days of the auction, this card jumped from $8000ish -> $18000ish. Selling for just under $30,000, it would be an upgrade for John Branca's set. I have a feeling he won it.

Lot 1433 - '33 Ruth PSA 6. What happened here? That consignor must be dancing around... I sure as heck would be after the beefy price it realized!

Whether I win anything or not, Mastro auctions are my favorite to follow. They consistently bring amazing items to the table and, based on my experience, every aspect is professional and top-notch.

Lot 391 - Ruth/Gehrig lot. I almost went for this one but Leon saved me.

Lot 1119 - "E" card collection. I was the under-bidder on this one and would have been thrilled to get it for my ceiling bid. I know others don't think it was worth as much, and I was anxious to prove them wrong.

Lot 1388 - e102 lot. I dropped out early on this. It's a beautiful lot, but I thought it went high. Still, great cards so enjoy.

As for lot 1119 - if you would have won it for your bid and it was for resale, I think you would have lost money on it.

Both lots 1119 (e card collection) and 1128 (4 T207s), in my opinion, aren't going to be a good buy if purchased for re-sale. For example, on lot 1128 if you bought the lot to get the Weaver, that means you must come up with about a remaining $1400 in value for a fair Saier miscut, good/very good Works and a VG Ragan. Saier would probably go for $400 on a very good day on ebay, Works about $100 meaning you'd need to get $900 for Ragans, probably a $300 card at the very best. That's a $600 loss. Then again, maybe the guy is putting together a T207 set, who knows...

Is there a way to send a note to the winner of a lot. I am sure I am not the first collector who wanted a part of a lot and would like to at least get a message to the winner of the lot expressing my interest if that person would like to contact me ?

I agree with Vorthian that the E102 set was very reasonable, especially considering what Dave Czuba's cards recently brought on EBay. (The Wagner, Matty, Collins, Lajoie, and Tinker alone probably would bring the cost of the entire lot).

But doesn't the description indicate an SGC 60 Matty, but the picture shows an SGC50? Not sure if the description or the scan was wrong - I didn't bid on the lot, so I never noticed before. I assume Vorthian must have clarified this ahead of time, as not much gets past him.

Bob: Usually when a lot exceeds my estimate, I begin to wonder if I might have made a mistake with the figures. In this case, perhaps it was a collector who really wanted that lot and money was no object. That is how a low pop 1933 Goudey PSA 8 COMMON sells for $25,000. To you and me, that is insane.

However, if it's an item for my collection, my "estimates" are out the window and I will do what it takes to attain it.

Tom: Even if the Matty were SGC 10, I still would have taken this bid. If that were the case, I'd surely need a better Matty to give Mr. "Candy Man" some competition for the top e102 set on the SGC registry!

There were quite a few interesting cards in Lot #1119. Just the cards shown in the picture alone add up to a substantial amount. In addition, the three E94 Baltimore News cards are very nice. No one is making money on this lot, but in today's candy card climate, I think the buyer can recoup much of his money on ebay.
