I was lucky and no one outbid me past my bedtime. In looking for an Indianapolis card from this tough set for the past year and a half, I’d only found one beat up partial. Never thought I’d see one like this. As a long-time card player, I love the unique history of the WG1.
Any early morning winners out there?!

I overpaid for one D304 and lost several lots that I expected to win after bidding beyond my comfort zone. I'm still floored by the final prices on some of the iconic cards, and I wonder if it's a one-off or the start of a trend.
A 1932 U.S. Caramel Ruth PSA 1 went for $14,040 (very nice appeal, but still a shocking number). Another PSA Authentic punched/canceled copy went for $10,898. It's a very cool conversation piece with the boot-shaped hold punches and stamp, but the price surprised me. A 1933 Goudey Ruth #53 PSA 1 with rounding, creasing, and toning... $11,426. A 1933 Goudey Ruth #181 PSA 1.5 with rounding, staining, and light paper loss... $11,281. A 1934 Goudey #37 Gehrig PSA 2 with rounding and front paper loss... $4255. It's also worth noting that the final prices I'm using are from Clean Sweep's auction results page, and they actually understate the total price by 2%. Clean Sweep appears to be using a 20% premium to report their results, but the actual premium on the invoices is 22%. Just crazy, crazy numbers for low-grade cards that come to auction fairly often. |

Nothing for me in this auction, but based on the auction results of the 38 items on my watchlist, the prices of vintage cards are still skyrocketing. Here are 2 examples of the auction results that really surprised me:
- A 1916 M101-4 Ware's Basement 1-of-1 card of Ty Cobb in PSA 2 condition sold for $100K! - A very rough PSA "A" Big-head strip card of Sam Rice sold for almost $1,000! Thankfully, I already have a nicer example in my Sam Rice collection. Mike, I just checked the final prices with BP for these 2 auction items, and I found that the final prices have been correctly calculated with the 22% BP.

Yes, it looks like the results have been updated to reflect the 22% premium.

I managed to pick up the Williards Chocolate of Cobb, bought not so much for the card but for hobby history on the back: a printed stamp of famous collector Buck Barker and Buck's printing of Jefferson Burdick's last name. I still love the history of the hobby.

Did Clean Sweep announce that they started charging sales tax everywhere?
Their FAQs say tax is charged for FL, IL, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, and WI: Quote:

Does this mean that AHs have to maintain 50 state sales tax accounts?

Every state we pass the reporting threshold on we then have to file with that state, so theoretically yes.

I suppose it's all just a rounding error when people are spending four to six figures on lots, but I tend to notice this stuff. |

Added a 1962 Bazooka box. Ungraded, PSA has only graded one other. Price tripled on me in the final minutes, but I now have Bazooka boxes from every year except 1959 and 1964.

I was looking at a combination for stuff for potential resale as well as for my PC.
All of the resale stuff went past where I wanted to get in. Definitely some strong prices for what I would call "average" stuff. Did really well for my PC though! : I've been piecing together a 1910 Tip Top Pirates set - I was able to snag all but 1 (Clarke) of the ones I needed (I think a total of 12), all for what I thought were very fair if not low prices. Not sure what happened on the Clarke, but that thing landed in the stratosphere. SO I'm down to "just" Wagner and Clarke on the Tip Top set! Pretty psyched about that. I was bidding hard on the Voskamp Carey - looking for a type card from that set - I was the underbidder unwilling to pay over $5K for that card in a PSA 1.5. As a nice consolation, I did win the Voskamp Miller - thought I paid a little to the strong side there, but hey they are rare as hens teeth. Then I won 2 Puerto Rican winter league programs from 1953 with a pre minor league Clemente in the lineup!! These are VERY rare ( I think I've seen maybe a half dozen over the past 35+ years). As I do have an earlier example, I may make these available.

Update: I couldn't find the exact post to post a link, but the seller was Jeff Gross / Gross Baseball Cards, who's on Net54. Maybe reach out to him and see if you can get the buyer's contact info? Hope this helps and you're down to only the Wagner soon. Last edited by BRoberts; 10-10-2025 at 06:18 AM. |

I enjoy the process of assembling (isn't that what collecting is about?), more than completing and am VERY patient.

If I had $104,000 to spend on a Joe Jackson, he wouldn't be wearing clown makeup. That lipstick...

Williams seem to be a fair amount scarcer than Rochester.
