(New to the forum) I came across a hand-cut W512 Rogers Hornsby (#9) card yesterday at a local show and checked with some of the vintage dealers in attendance before purchasing the card. Hoping the experts here could answer a few questions please based on what I what I was told at the show.
1) The card is raw, it has good front color, heavy staining on the back, and obvious signs of being hand-cut. I would call it a “Poor”, but was told SGC will only give it an “Authentic”, is that correct? 2) Before they saw the card, vendors admonished me to get a guarantee that the card is genuine (I did). Upon seeing it, they all concurred it was legit. Is counterfeiting of these strip cards something to be concerned about? 3) The number and lettering at the bottom of the card is blue. I was informed that blue ink is scarcer than black ink (or no number at all). Is that true? 4) Presuming a SGC “Authentic”, how does one go about determining FMV for a card like this (not selling, just curious)? I love pre-war Tobacco cards so this W512 was an impulse buy for me. Thnx in advance- |

1) Need a picture of card to confirm. Normally authentic strip cards are not cut to the proper proportion including the full borders, if they were printed with borders. If not, there is normally a minimum size required for them to get a number grade.
2) Some strip cards are indeed counterfeited/reprinted. 3) https://www.oldcardboard.com/w/w512/...?cardsetID=813 is a checklist of the set and some knowledge. Pop reports at PSA and SGC (if they even break out text color as a variation) would help you locate this information. 4) PSA's Auction Prices Realized, ebay sold listings, or VCP (Vintage Card Prices) all track historical sales of vintage cards. However, there can be wide swings in Authentic cards based on image clarity, condition, and eye appeal. Ebay sold listings of that card

So yes, authentic based on no black borders which would constitute a "full" card. Maybe $100 based on recent sales. Eye appeal a little lacking due to the poor registration of the red/magenta screen. You can see it peeking high on the interior border where it should stop.

But it is Hornsby so I think maybe a tad more. And sometimes a little misprinting can enhance the appeal a little, though I am not sure about that one.

John, what about this card for authenticity? Are you talking about the solid black border along the very left edge of the card?

Yes, the black border on the left and right (and top or bottom depending on which row it's in) should be visible for the card to measure full.
I'm not an expert in strip card authenticity, but if you have it in hand you can compare the dot pattern under 10x or 20x magnification with your card to verify it's authentic. They don't print the same way anymore, even counterfeiters. https://www.net54baseball.com/forum/...ivecenter.html Use this link and scroll down to some of the articles about determining real/fakes.
