Default October 2024 Pickups

The 1967 Chevron/Uniroyal Vancouver Mounties are an extremely rare regional
PCL set that was issued in Vancouver Canada. Very happy to add this card
to my collection.

1962-63 Shirriff Hockey Coins

I bought a great looking set of these circa 1999. But when I squinted hard I detected that a handful of the sixty had a paint chip/fleck or two. So they needed to be upgraded of course....

1968-69 Shirriff Hockey Coins

While I completed a set of the 1968-69 Hockey coins in the late 1990's, every single Ken Hodge coin I'd seen including the one on the above right from my collection was slightly miscut along the bottom. Therefore when I saw a Ken Hodge coin without the miscut on Ebay two weeks ago, I bought it immediately. Now my set is perfect!

Default Finally :

I've finally found a 4 x 50/50 1957 rookie Don D. Some '57's can be maddening for centering weenies :

..I'm building ( since forever ) a dead-centered master of 1957 Topps and as you can imagine it can be a long slog. Why yes , as a mater of fact , I do indeed drink , ; how did you know ?

Yeah, I know this isn’t Postwar, but when they get something cool that doesn’t fit their genre over on the main board, I see the Prewar guys posting Topps cards - so I figured this might be OK here just once.

Normally not my cup of tea, but this thing absolutely glows - and I couldn’t stop thinking about it at the LCS this week. Finally pulled the trigger and glad I did!

Wrote up an article on the show where I bought it, including a few observations on the hobby gleamed from the show:

My first takeaway was I can't believe 1987 was 37 frickin' years ago!!!
As Scooby would say, "YOINKS!!!"

It was nice to read about the tone of the negotiations and the veritable good deal you got from a clearly decent guy. There are plenty of reports of sellers who stick like barnacles to their (often ridiculous) prices, but it's nice to hear about some of the good guys.

A nice read!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the read. Yes, after I got past the shine of all the modern cards, there was some good for sure at the show.

And yes, in a hobby where everyone (except on Net 54) seems to have been at this since way back in 2020, 1987 feels like a LONG time ago!

Default 1984 Topps Tiffany Home Run Leaders #132 Mike Schmidt/Jim Rice PSA 9

Not a big dollar card by any means, but it's a 40 year old card with two Hall of Famers, with a total PSA Pop of only 124.

1984 Topps Tiffany AL ERA Leaders #717 PSA 9

Not big bucks by any means....in fact, it was cheaper than the cheapest blaster...but it's 40 years old, features two Hall of Famers and another guy with an argument, and is from the Tiffany set, of which only 7,000-10,000 (depending who you believe). Total PSA population is only 14.

I actually purchased this 1970 Topps Willie Mays card raw online in early June before Willie passed away. It bought it as priced as an EX grade card at the time I bought it, but thought it was under graded. I finally got around to sending it off for grading earlier this month and just got it back. I was pleasantly surprised when it came back as an SGC 8. Nice to be lucky sometimes.

Beautifully printed card - Tough to find without centering issues and that dang white line at the top

A mid-grade 1968 Topps Rod Carew card that I bought raw at the beginning of the month that just came back from being graded, for the Carew run that I’m working on.

I also picked up this 1966 Topps Tony Perez ungraded earlier this month for my Perez run, which also just came back from grading. I’ve always been a big fan of his and the Topps All-Star trophies and cups on their cards.

It really is. I was very happy and fortunate to find it. It sure is a challenge to find nicely centered cards from that 1970 Topps set. I like the simple design of that set and I think they look pretty nice in SGC slabs.

Grabbed another one up of Gerald Staley on the cheap.
These slip through the cracks occasionally, it seems.

Good end to the month here with this pickup, the 1967 Tom Seaver rookie card. It wraps up my Tom Seaver Topps base card run (plus the ‘72 and ‘82 In Action cards).

Great card, Michael. I remember how excited I was when I picked up that card.

All of these are being added to my trade box. So they are available!

Went yesterday on my off day to my LCS, and I picked up the Mantle. Went back today after work, and I grabbed the rest of the set. Adding it to my trade box.

And some $1 box pickups from the Dallas Show.
The creased Clemente is part of the set above. It wasn't a $1 box pickup.

Very happy to add a PSA 7 copy of El Tiante's 1965 Topps RC to my collection as he's named to the HOF ballot. It will be bittersweet if he is finally elected so soon after his passing, but great pitcher, great card, and great character!

That’s a beauty, Mike. Great pitcher, fun guy. I hope he makes it into the HOF in 2025.
