I’ve been collecting signed 1933 Goudey cards for over 10 years and I now believe I have the most complete signed set that exists. I currently have 216 of the 239 cards in the set autographed. It has been a long and fascinating quest and I’m currently writing a book about this project and the 1933 Goudey set in general. I hope to be finished with the book later this year.
I’m constantly trying to upgrade my cards to get the best example available. I won quiet a few from the recent Memory Lane auction but I missed out on two. If you won, or if you know who won the signed 33 of Jess Petty from the Uncle Jimmy Collection, could you message me please? Also, if you know who won Lot #339, I’d be interested in the Frank Hogan card that was in the lot as an upgrade. I’m always looking for signed 1933 Goudey cards from the Uncle Jimmy Collection. I currently have close to 40 signed 1933 Goudey cards from the Uncle Jimmy Collection. I hope I can get to 50 from his amazing collection soon. If you have any signed 1933 Goudey cards from the Uncle Jimmy Collection, message me. I’d love to know what you have. I’d really like to find a signed Jim Bottomley from the Uncle Jimmy Collection…he had 3. Finally, if you have a signed 1933 Goudey and you’re willing to part with it, email me a photo. I’m seriously always upgrading. I also have quite a few extras if you’re looking to add a few signed ones to your collection, message me. I appreciate your time! Marty S. Amazing! Will you finish the set with unsigned at some point if it looks like you've hit a wall? And are there any that seem pretty unlikely given an early demise of the player?

Maybe? I actually put together a PSA graded 2 set a few years back but sold it to buy more signed ones that I needed.
I have two small children, so I doubt I ever try for any of the 4 signed Ruth's or 2 signed Gehrig cards. I think I can probably get maybe 10 more... I'm in it for the long haul and I'm fairly young. ![]() Last edited by martyesullivan; 03-13-2022 at 03:39 PM. Reason: TYPO |

Good luck with your project, and I’ll be sure to pick up a copy of the book when it comes out.

Jeff and Scott, thank you. I appreciate the kind words.
Hank, sure, there are lots of great stories, that’s why I’m writing the book. 😊 There are 4 cards that no one I’ve ever talked to has seen signed copies of: Fred Brickell, Pete Scott, Russell Rollings, and Dan Howley. That said, it is rumored that a guy named Pat Quinn from Illinois had a complete signed set in the late 1970’s. His Lajoie was the only known signed example and it’s now in the collection of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. I hope that story is true, and I sure hope signed copies of those four cards show up one day. As for guys that died early, these are the first three deaths in the set: Earl Clark died in 1938, Heathcote died in 1939, and Welch died in 1940; I have all three of those signed…fortunately. I have several signed cards from the set that are the only known example. |

I believe Pat's son is on the boards under Quinnsryche (sp). I might have made that up though.

Hank,
Thanks, I'll reach out to Kevin Keating. I would love to get a few good stories about Pat Quinn. Ted, I'll reach out to his son too. Small world! Thanks for the suggestion! My best, Marty S. |

Marty,
Great 1933 Story here! Wow! I have only owned 1 Goudey signed and it was a BEAUTIFUL 1933 Bill Herman that I had gotten from him in the mail back in the 1980s! It was so nice! I'm ashamed to tell you what I sold it for! Ugh! If you have a stunning Herman........it was mine! ![]() I'll keep my eyes peeled! Thanks for sharing! ![]() Although, sometimes I pause before admitting that. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll ask him if it's true or not. I know at one point he had at least a half dozen Ruths and Gehrigs and kept one of each that hung framed on the wall for at least 20 years before he sold them. Sometimes it's hard to take the salesman out of the collector/store owner. I'll post what I find out soon.

Just asked him, yes he did have a complete set of 33 Goudey signed. I was wrong about the Ruth and Gehrig, there were 12 of each!

Tony,
Thanks for posting! I'd love to talk with your dad! The Lajoie was actually dated 1936 and sold for $25k back in 1999. It was part of the Barry Halper Collection that was sold by Sotheby's. The signed Lajoie is in their catalog which you can get for a few bucks on eBay. The winner put it back up for auction the next year and Barry Halper bought it back and gave it to the Hall of Fame. You can see the card here: https://twitter.com/baseballhall/sta...16584534081536 My best, Marty S |

This just gets better and better. There aren't too many UNSIGNED Lajoie's around, are there?

Hank,
You're right...I think there are about 100 Lajoie cards in all of the population reports. Of course, those are unsigned! ![]() Marty S. |

Say hi to your dad for me. We had dinner together along with John Rumeriez two Chicago Nationals ago. The three of us shared "war stories" from the early 70's shows and trades etc. Spoke to him at the last National at his table a few times over the days of the show. Fred

Thanks to everyone that has messaged me. I was able to add a few more from the Uncle Jimmy Collection this week.
I'm still trying to track down these three from the Uncle Jimmy Collection. If you have them, or know where they are at, please message me: Jess Petty, Frank Hogan, and Jim Bottomley. If you have a signed 1933 Goudey, message me please. I'm always trying to upgrade when I can. I have a few extras too if you're looking for someone, let me know. Thanks, Marty S. email: martyesullivan@yahoo.com Instagram: @signed1933goudey |

You guys are great! I found the Frank Hogan! I'm happy to add that upgrade to my collection.
If anyone knows where any signed 1933 Goudey cards from the Uncle Jimmy Collect are, please let me know. I'd love to add his Jess Petty and Jim Bottomley to my set but would consider any of his cards! Thanks! Marty S. martyesullivan@yahoo.com |

Hi Marty, congratulations on your achievements so far! What an undertaking. I only have 3 signed 33 Goudey's. I'm waiting to get them back from PSA but the grades popped today. I think maybe the Red Kress is pretty rare as it only has a pop of 4 in PSA. Thought I would share with you.

Strangely, Kress is the only 33 I have (not that I've ever gone after them). It's not slabbed and never will be as long as I own it.

Hey Billy, that's quite the coincidence! Since Kress died in 1962 I wouldn't think there would be a lot of these around - or not very many people get them graded. I've got a lot of autographed cards, but most are ungraded. I'm considering selling a lot of my collection in the next few years and wanted to get some of the pre 1940 cards authenticated and encased. As you can see from my Kress card, it has seen a lot of love already by the wear and tear!

Mine looks much better than yours on the front, but has a vintage, 1930's chewing gum wrapper affixed to the back for some reason! I think that trying to remove it would only risk compromizing the fountain pen autograph, so will leave it be. Besides, it's aesthetically cool as it is with the wrapper!
