Ugh. This is horrible news. My daughter is a student-athlete at UCLA and Walton always went out of his way for them and would show up randomly at many of their events. He definitely had a unique personality and I became a big fan over the years. There is a great ESPN 30 on 30 about him was called The Luckiest Guy in the World that is definitely worth watching if you are a fan. RIP Bill.

"Special K" to "Dr. J." He WAS really good but sort of fizzled after about 6-7 years in the pros.

Another great Walton moment, although this time not in his favor. A 6'4" (if he was that) David Thompson rejects his shot in one of the greatest blocked shots ever. Thompson, like Bob Beamon in Mexico City, appears to have been granted a temporary exemption from the law of gravity.

I was walking down Pearl Street in Boulder, CO circa 2010 with my son. Saw Bill walk by. He was there for a Pac12 hoops broadcast. I told him we were fans and asked if he would take a photo with my son. He gave me that big toothy grin and said “sure.” I snapped the photo and thanked him. He said “you’re a great dad” and went on his merry way. My son and I will never forget that. The world will miss Bill Walton. A nice man and an American original. RIP Bill.

I interviewed Bill for a documentary I was producing and directing about his college rival David Thompson. Although Bill described losing to Thompson's NC State team in 1974 as his biggest basketball disappointment of his career, he gave a great interview. He mentioned Wooden never spoke of an opposing player in his 4 years except David Thompson. Biil and David stayed friends and that 1974 semi final game in the NCAA Tourney was an all time great game. Having forgot to have Walton sign the SkyWalker poster he invited me back the next month and I spent half the day with he and his wife Lori. Bill and I stayed in touch and I would send him DVD's and T-shirts "so he could educate the young players about the history of the game". He introduced me to his contact at UCLA to get awesome seats for Bruin games. Sadly that guy retired .....I even quote him on the DVD cover (version 3 but my favorite cover). Walton and Jordan were by far the most famous and best interview subjects. Here is the DVD cover with the Walton quote and a picture I sent Bill a few years ago where he is about 6" over the white square 11 1/2' feet up. An incredible experience with one of the friendliest, famous athletes anyone could ever have the privilege of working with and knowing
