...Was watching the Katie Taylor / Amanda Serrano fight.
Amanda Serrano is awesome. And she was robbed. I'm not sure if that fight is representative of women's boxing, but if it was, I prefer that to watching the men box. It's like women's soccer versus men's soccer. The men spent half the time writhing around on the pitch, grabbing at their shins, and pretending to cry, while the women just try to bludgeon each other. |

That was a magnificent performance followed by a blatant robbery. That last round we are watching rock em sock ‘em robots. Awesome.

I know it makes me sounds like a fuddy duddy, if not worse, but I have no interest in watching young women beat the shit out of each other.

Agree that was the fight of the night and agree she was robbed.
A couple questionable decisions on that card. Judges were brutal. |

That's my gut reaction as well, much as I like to think I'm not a sexist.

I just see them as world class boxers who deserve to be able to do what the men do. If I want to think about the broader social impact, I'd say that if they became more mainstream in terms of how society sees women, we wouldn't have so many issues with guys going home and beating up on their wives.

It’s incredibly frustrating that Taylor seems to consistently lead with her head and does this regularly. Serrano had that fight, close but undoubtedly should have got the decision. Rough this was second robbery in two fights between the two.
Props to the coach for really stepping up for his fighter in the end. That’s a strong corner. Had the headbutts not been an issue and disabling the right vision, it would have likely ended in KO for Serrano. The Tyson fight was honestly sad and did not help a legacy that remains amazing but now has a greed asterisk. I hope he please does not do it again, age has won.

Yup. I'm not a big MMA fan, but they've done a much better job of promoting womens combat sports, and the talent pool is much deeper there, than it is in boxing. Boxing goes through spurts and cycles where it looks like womens boxing is going to break out and become more mainstream, and then it just peters out and is never promoted with any sort of consistency.

The Tyson fight was promotional genius. One guy with no track record to speak of, and a 58 year old (I mean come on, that's beyond absurd to expect anyone that age no matter how fit for his age or how good in his prime could still box competitively), and yet look at the level of interest and the revenues

It was over before it started LOL. Tyson did a nice job of selling it though. Did people actually believe a 58 year old who had not fought in 19 years could beat even a mediocre boxer in the prime of his life? Apparently so.

I signed up to watch it, but I also wanted to see the movie "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" on Netflix. I figured for $6.00 it was a pretty good deal, much cheaper than going to the movies.
After I paid, I went to watch the fight but it wouldn't load for me. I was pretty disappointed but feel a little better knowing it was a terrible spectacle. I'm not a woman's boxing fan. I don't hate it, but can take it or leave it. Women wrestling on the other hand, even as fake as it is........ |

I watched the Taylor / Serrano fight as as others mentioned, Serrano was robbed.
The Tyson fight was boring. What would you expect from a 20 something year old vs a 58 year old. However, I wish Tyson would have crushed him. |

I went back and watched the 3 undercard fights that were available on replay.
#1. Goyat vs. Nunes - The 1st 6 round fight between the Indian "Influencer" and the Brazilian "Influencer", was about what you would expect from a bottom of the card bout. Goyat really outclassed Nunes, but it was essentially an amateur style slap fight. Time killer. #2. Barrios vs. Ramos for the WBC Welterweight Title was definitely the bout of the night IMO. This should have gotten more post-fight talk then any of the bouts. 2 pretty evenly matched, skilled but not quite elite guys going toe to toe for most of the bout. Ramos the big underdog, looking over-matched in the beginning, while making some pretty high level adjustments as the fight wore on. Barrios, the obviously more athletically gifted, bigger, taller fighter in the ring, imposing his will early on, but being outsmarted and making more tactical mistakes as the fight wore on. Still, he did not completely disintegrate due to his excellent conditioning, and held his own long enough to hang on in the end. I thought the Draw decision was fitting. Felt bad for Ramos, but Barrios socked away a lot of early rounds, and in the end, I think they both made themselves some money for a rematch, regardless of who ended up walking away with the belt. #3 Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor - I'll admit, I'm conflicted on this one. I certainly wanted Serrano to win this fight, but I don't think it was quite the "robbery" everybody thought it was. I've watched enough fights to get the feeling when the Compubox is full of shit, and this is one of those fights. Somebody was just punching buttons like a monkey during this bout, to record all those punches and connects. Compubox is certainly not the whole story on the course of an entire fight scored by rounds. This was not an easy fight to score. Let's get this out of the way. Katie Taylor is a dirty fighter. I hate the Billy Goat style. It is not aesthetically pleasing. However it is a style of boxing that goes back to the beginnings of the sport. This is not a new strategy for men or women. From Harry Greb to Fritzie Zivic to Sandy Saddler to Evander Holyfield and many more, it's been a staple of the sport, and if a ref sees it as your "fighting style", they are loathe to punish you to the point of negating the bout. Amanda Serrano did her best to put on an aesthetically pleasing fight. It was not in Katie Taylor's interest to do the same. Time after time, Taylor smothered Serrano, butted her, and then she would take two steps back, unleash a quick, flashy combination to Serrano's head, and then get back in her grill, where Serrano didn't have the room to extend her punches, and couldn't do much more then push her punches off to try and get more room, and land a few body shots, that ringside judges notoriously have a hard time seeing as effective blows. Of course Serrano did land her fair share of nice head shots to, but not to the extent that Compubox was telling you she did. Again, I would have rather Serrano won, but understand why she didn't. Either way it should lead to another great payday for both fighters down the line. I thought the fight overall was pretty sloppy. Sure, lots of action, but sloppy as hell. Again, no fault of Serrano's...but fights aren't judged for how pretty they look. The Barrios vs. Ramos fight I believe was the fight of the night, because of that. #4. Lastly, the announcing for the whole event, was beyond bad. I think the worst I've ever heard. Roy Jones makes some great points during fights, but he's a horrible announcer. Would have rather Andre Ward was in there during the bouts, and Roy Jones back at that useless round table between fights. Romullo.....or whatever his name is. Great, great, great....Pro Wrestling announcer. Terrible boxing announcer. No technical knowledge whatsoever, for an alleged play by play commentator.....and then Rosie Perez???? Oh man, I like Rosie, I really do......but no........no. Not for this. Each on their own might have been ok...but they just had horrible chemistry together. Fini! ![]()

My high school kids the next day were full of conspiracy theories that Mike Tyson threw the fight. What world were they living in? I had to tell one class that throwing a fight is serious consequences, and Mike Tyson wasn't going to throw a fight. And it would be the end of Jake Paul's boxing career if he had set it up.
Mike Tyson obviously had a strategy: circle the interior of the ring and let Paul come to him. But he never unleashed, which I was expecting in the first and last round. He made a nice effort in the 1st, settled into a groove, and never left the groove in the 8th. I was really expecting him to try and land a KO in the 8th. It was boring, and he looked old and washed up. But his pay day is big! Like Peter said, amazing work by the organizers to get us pumped up for a deflated balloon.

I think on some level it was because Paul is such a jerk that a lot of people wanted to see someone -anyone knock him out or at least get close.
No that Tyson has always been a great person, but of the two.... Ah well, maybe soon Paul gets a match with a younger boxer who is good. |
