1971 OPC Baseball card #289 Rusty Staub

Good evening. For someone that knows and can shed a bit of light on this for me.I was looking at some
1971 OPC baseball on eBay this evening and I noticed that card #289 of Rusty Staub says a "different pose"
and it is quite expensive. I would have thought that he was not much more than a common. But even if we
say unlisted star. It still would not get to where I seen the prices.So my question is. Was there
two cards of his in the set at #289 with different pictures. And one of them being more scarce than
the other.PLMK if you happen to know. Thanks.

The 1971 OPC #289 Rusty Staub has a different pose than the Topps issue, the 1971 OPC #560 Rusty Staub has the same pose as the regular Topps issue. There is only one version of the 71 OPC #289 Staub and only one version of the 71 OPC #560 Staub.

OK, I now see what my problem was. He has two cards in the OPC set and only one card in the Topps set.Thanks a lot for the help.

289 was the White Sox Team Card in the original Topps set.

For anyone who is an Expos collector (like me) that OPC card is in extremely high demand, which probably explains the high price. Staub is remembered in Montreal as the team’s first star and one of the most important players in Expos history, but there were only a few regular cards of him in an Expos uniform ever released. The 1971 (both Topps and OPC) are probably the best looking of those, and since the OPC is scarcer and 289 specifically has a different pose it is very much sought after by Expos fans.

Hmmmm, never knew this. What other quirks are there in the OPC set in terms of subbed out cards? Did the Chisox Team ever get issued in Canada?

Well there is at least two other Expo players that have two cards in the OPC version and only one in the Topps version

Thanks for the link...great information. Growing up close to the Canada border as a kid we HATED OP cards and threw them away...lol. Not even sure why, just did. I used that list today to add the different poses to my binder set (except Staub and Raymond...quite the premium!), fun purchases...

What else?

OPC cards were poorly made, so centering and smooth borders are rare. They have a tiny pop compared to Topps. The backs are much nicer than Topps cards (in printing terms, they used two-sided stock instead of one-sided), higher grade is rare. Even midgrade superstars are costly.

I’m about 140 High #’s short of completing this set, thankfully got into them before they really took off. Only OPC set I’m doing.

Have maybe ten HOF studs in psa 6 or 7. A nice Clemente is going to be the toughest to obtain.

Clemente leading the pack because of his popularity, but the high numbers in even mid-grade are sooooo tough! Good luck completing yours.

Yet interestingly enough, there are two #513 OPC Ryan's in PSA 10, and no 10's for regular Topps.

After 15+ years of working on this set, I have finally finished it. In going through my final acquisition to complete my set, I came across 2 versions of the #121 checklist card (same as the Topps). My question is are there multiple versions of the other checklist cards (excluding the 1st series) also?

I hate to be Debbie Downer but after some sleuthing on eBay I found there are variations for 1971 OPC Checklists #369 and #619 just like their 1971 Topps counterparts. #369 can be found with and without the black line above the ear on the helmet on the front, #619 can be found with a plain red helmet on the front and no copyright line on the back OR with several black shadow lines on the red helmet on the front and a copyright line on the back. I will post links to all four. Do you have the two team color variations, #27 Pirates Rookie Stars and #144 Jackie Hernandez?

Thank you Cliff....yes, I have both versions of the 27, 144 and 369 cards. With the 369 card, the w/o line version has a recurring factory print mark above Clay Carroll's checkbox. This recurring print mark appears to be specific to OPC. I will be content with the one copy of the 619 card I do have though.

Larry, I haven't been to any type of card show now for over 2-3 yrs, and truthfully, since I mainly go after 52 Topps and hockey cards up here, (52's are very rare) I honestly can't say.
Have you tried logging into eBay.ca then typing in 71 OPC baseball?

If you scroll down on the left hand side, you can choose "Canada" only which will show you just Canadian listings, obviously. I just purchased a card last night, another 52 Topps high number from a U.S. seller and the CDN dollar value through PayPal was at .72 cents. Sucked for me but would be a bonus for you and others.
