Default Scammers all Over This Site Be Careful

All I have to say is please be careful buying on this site, there are many scammers vulturing each post. When buying please make sure if not a trusted seller to have the seller coin each photo and only pay PayPal GS for added protection. I added a post looking for a graded 52 Bowman Mays and multiple scammers reached out but ironically none could deliver a coined photo as well as not have legit vouches. Please be careful!

^^^This cannot be stressed enough^^^

I noticed a huge uptick in new members posting on BST since the pandemic (not a knock on you OP with only 6 posts ) with very questionable deals... no pictures, cards being offered at 1/4 of ebay prices, etc.

I'm not as active as I used to be on here largely because of that, and when I do it's usually with one of the "dinosaurs" who've been on here for years. Hope to get more active with new members once the craziness recedes.

Seems like the last couple have been responding to WTB posts. One of the scammers even had 0 posts.

Default coined photo

Thank you so much for the heads up. Dumb question: what is a "coined" photo? Thanks! Jeff

Coining: Take a picture of the card next to a piece of paper with your name and date to show that the card is presently in your possession.

Appreciate it! Fair enough I have appreciated interactions I have had on net54baseball but I’m clearly new to the community. I focus mainly on eBay (have over 1200 feedback) but also present on Reddit, FB and myslabs, but really enjoy the community here especially from the dinosaurs like you mentioned I just wish these was a way we could better vet out users before they are active like myslabs has!

Apparently many people in this thread don't read the fu^%$#@ front page. WE have been talking about this for months.
As long as you are careful you are fine. If you act like an idiot you won't be.

And there is no need to coin on this site. Just PM me and I will call the person if I need to to make sure they are ok....This isn't effing facebook...

The Net54 bst is one of my very favorite places to make purchases. I have even sold a little here over the years. There's a ton of good guys here. It takes a little time to get to know who they are.

Thank you, Leon, for everything you do to keep Net54 as up and up as we can. I don’t post a ton, but I have been on the site for a very long time, and done a number of great deals with many guys.

I think a big key is becoming familiar with the site and the regulars who have been around for a while. Participation, even if just reading the site daily, is a great tip.

I love it here and would hate to see the BST devolve into a land mine field. Thank you all for everything you guys do to keep N54 great!

A guy asked me to coin four cards at a grand total of $250 and I laughed. If you can't get the measure of someone from a couple of conversations, AVOID.

No offense to each of you that think this is funny, but you all need to stop. There is nothing wrong with asking to coin a card regardless of price. This is standard practice especially online and with those that don’t have credibility or experience. With how prevalent scamming is online and the huge influx of newer folks into the hobby there is nothing wrong with being skeptical up front when there are so many scammers, fakes, and frauds out there. Ideally, this site would continue to grow including ways to protect its users from the frauds out there versus opening the doors to them and having users laugh at people that ask to coin a card or question someone that doesn’t have creditability.

Coining is the dumbest thing ever. I've seen scammers photoshop their names on other people's coined pics.

If i'm making a large purchase I check other references like ebay, their social media, linkedin and we message each other from there to confirm their identity. There's also a simple phone call or video call. Check references, etc.

Nobody's laughing at you, it's just old school here where members take care of each other without having to vet by coining, if you have a question about another member or potential transaction just pm Leon and ask his advice, he's on top of everything here and doesn't miss anything. You might have to practice self vetting everywhere else but not here, there's plenty of old school members waiting to help. Just breathe, introduce yourself on the main sub and tell us what you are passionate about in the collecting world, the rest will work out. Trust and integrity are a big thing here, that makes it a special place, it's an alien concept to most folks but jump in the pool you won't regret it.

Totally agree with you, definitely not saying to only trust coining... There are many avenues to use judgment in addition to coining in order to validate someone without strong experience/reputation on a particular site when buying.

I'm relatively newer here, never had a problem. Most of the people on this board are trustworthy, good, honest people. Research is key, but when in doubt, talk to Leon.

That being said, while the hobby is certainly booming, which is always nice that we have renewed interest in cardboard, that comes with the downside of scammers appearing.

I would trust members here over a coined card from some guy with a made up name on facebook any day.

Ive been scammed (or caught scams before falling for them) on facebook a number of times.

Here- heck, guys here send free cards with tracking just because you need them. Its a community of collectors here, Facebook, while it has its place, is the wild west of collecting

So settle in and enjoy it here- youll learn a ton about the hobby, meet good people, and likely find some great cards!

Ed
