Hello. Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I have the same story as a lot of collectors. My baseball playing days were during the late 80s and 90s. Was a big collector before college, work, marriage and kids came along. During covid I decided to go through my thousands of mint "junk" era cards with the sole intent of selling to make more space in the house for our newest child. That process reignited a passion. I ended up back in the hobby this year and absolutely loving every minute. I have tried a little bit of everything to help decide on what I love the most. Tried new wax packs, old wax packs, modern graded, junk graded, vintage etc... I love it all but nothing really seams to feel like vintage. Have to thank Gustomania for sending me over here to net54. I first posted in blowout vintage. Gustomania mentored me through my first vintage purchases and helped me start a mid grade 1956 set focusing on eye appeal that will be a long term project (5 to 10 years). I will post a shot here of what I have started. That's about it. Really just looking forward to my time on this forum. Thanks for having me. If you have any advice for my 1956 set please share! I am trying to learn as much as possible.

Welcome Jerry and best advice is to collect centered cards in the best condition possible for any postwar set.

+1. As a kid, the first set I collected was 1955 Topps, but the first set I went after with great gusto was the 1956 Topps - I really liked this set. In the late 1980's, I resurrected my childhood collection that Mom, bless her, didn't toss out. I learned of a card show and went to see what it was all about, and I discovered that baseball cards existed long before WWII. Before long, I was hooked on pre-War cards almost exclusively. I encourage you to give a pre-War set a try, but be careful, you too might get hooked!

Welcome! A good “beginner” pre-war set might be 1940 Play Ball - has connects with post-war and has a bunch of retired stars that can get you in touch with the dead ball era and ‘20s - like Wagner, Johnson, Mathewson and Alexander without breaking the bank.
I’ve always been a fan of the 56 set as well. Love the background action shots. |

My advice for the OP: read as many threads about the alteration scandal as you can.

Thank you. I will do a search for those. I have noticed a lot of PWCC auctions on same cards end within a few dollars of each other on a regular basis. This alone has made me stay clear of PWCC. But I don't know much outside of that observation.
