I recently submitted a lot of 8 cards to SGC that had once been attached to a scrapbook. The scrapbook paper is still attached to the back and SGC refused to holder them. Is there any grader out there who will do so? I have thought about trying to soak the cards and resubmit to SGC. Would they holder them then in your opinion. Just looking for "A" on these as they are part of a set im building. Any opinions on what I should do? Thanks.....Dan

There have been multiple threads discussing soaking to remove scrapbook remnants. If I recall correctly some cards are soakable and others are not.
If you choose to do that - test 1 card first so you have a real world test for yourself. I do suspect if there were no scrapbook paper on them that SGC would grade them.

Did you opt for an "authentic" grade when you sent them in? Sometimes they're returned because at best they can be labeled authentic but not everyone selects authentic as a minimum grade.

Huh. Here I was going to suggest SGC. I've got an SGC 1 with scrapbook junk on the back. Although to be fair, I was surprised they graded it.

I was surprised that SGC wouldn't holder them. Their explanation was that their graders didn't feel comfortable Authenticating the cards with the paper on the back. I was pretty disappointed that a "professional grader" couldn't authenticate the cards in question. They are 100 percent real, and I've never seen fakes. They are 1910 w-unc cards if you were wondering.

I did opt for an "A" grade on these. I also submitted a Matty that I actually cracked from a BVG holder that wasn't part of the scrapbook cards that they didn't holder. I submitted a 1947 sports exchange mini Ted Williams also that they wouldn't grade because they were "Uncomfortable with it". Im really displeased with my overall experience, but hey...I got my submission back in 10 days! Easy to do when you only grade half the cards.

Re soaking cards. I followed David Kathman's instructions
https://www.net54baseball.com/showpo...70&postcount=7 and soaked a 1949 Leaf Wagner and a 1949 Bowman Doby and the scrapbook and paste residue came completely off both.

If the entire back is covered, I can understand how graders might be hesitant to authenticate a card they can only half see.
Didn't say I necessarily agree with it, but I can understand the reasoning. |

As others have said, most of the TPG's won't holder cards if they are still attached to a scrapbook. You should be able to soak them to remove it from the scrapbook. if you haven't done it before, start with only one card that is the cheapest in value.
If for some reason, the scrapbook doesn't come off, your only shot is probably with Beckett. I've found them to give the most leeway in holdering cards like this and just giving it the Authentic grade. Here's an example of a skinned card that they holdered for me years ago. Since they can’t examine the whole
Card they absolutely should not grade it. Good for SGC. |

I feel grading and authenticating are two different things. Im not looking for a grade but simply getting the cards in holders stating that they are authentic.

Though many years ago, I was told by the head of grading that if Beckett can identify it and it fits in the holder, they will holder it.

I emailed SGC to find out why they neglected to grade two of my 1910 w-unc cards in my last submission and was told that they no longer grade that issue.
I just received my other submission back from them like a week ago where they graded a few of my w-unc cards......so this is a brand new policy???? Really odd.....now the huge price increase??? SGC has lost my business forever. ![]() |
