This last week Heritage had a decent assortment of 19th century items. Normally, I collect n172s, but the piece in question caught my eye.
https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c...=MyBids-101116 Have never seen anything like it and was hoping someone could shed some light on it. Portrays Matthews and Boyd. Oddly, this pose of Matthews is not seen in the n172 set. Boyd is a big rarity and the main reason I picked up this piece. Has anyone ever seen anything like it? When might these have been produced? Why would Heritage claim they were produced circa 1910? What might they have been produced for? Are there others? Did I waste my money on a worthless fantasy piece? |

I will defer to others with more expertise on N172s but I believe this item might date to the c. 1920s. At that time, repros of the N172s were made from the original negatives. In fact, as I recall, there were uncut sheets of entire teams generated, and I believe each player image might have been cabinet size.
Whether you wasted your money is a subjective determination. You have something very old and interesting, only not dating to the 1880s. The price you paid IMO was not unreasonable. |

Not to highjack this thread, but I am struck by the low prices of most the 19th century material. There were some outstanding bargains. I'm sorry I missed the auction.

I own several of those uncut sheets/team sets. Most auctions have sold them as being made for the 50th anniversary of the NL. But who knows

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I thought it was cool and couldn't help but bid. After I won I started to second guess myself, but am ultimately happy with it. |

It's still a nice piece because of the Maroon's player image. I have a cabinet or two of n172 images on 20th century pieces. PH Mayo or something like that.
That was a nice collection for auction. I thought the scorecards sold well, i.e. I ended up not buying any of the 8 or 9 I had bids on. The tintypes looked like they were going cheap, but I did not bid b/c I already had too many lots on my plate.

Hello Travis, nice images that were indeed created from the Goodwin glass plate negatives. Those negatives are still in the hobby today, I have the Matthews and I believe I know where the Boyd resides. Your photos were likely created, as stated earlier in this thread, during the early 20th century.
Here is scan of my negative with the colors inverted. The clarity of the negative is amazing and allows for a very high quality print/photo to be developed. Enjoy your cabinet! I've written about this particular negative and many others HERE.

I never look at the Sunday Heritage auctions. I figured just the dregs went in there. However, there do appear to be some decent pieces that went cheap. Maybe I need to start looking.
