In addition to my other sports collecting, I have started to acquire thoroughbred racing memorabilia.
Since it dates back to the 1800s it has lots of history. Anyone else have any horse racing items? (pins, cards, buttons or statues)

I have a few 1800's cards I bought as a lot ages ago, most are actually cut from a banner. N229 or N230. I may have a couple other things, but my sister had horses for a while, so most of the stuff I find goes to her.

Been a thoroughbred horse racing fan since the mid 70's. It is far and away my favorite sport, for the sheer gallantry of the horses. Most of my "collection" consists of prints, autographed photos, pins (Ruffian/Foolish Pleasure match race and such). Believe it or not, I'm considering getting a lawn statue from an outfit in Saratoga Springs who will make and custom paint them in your own colors if so desired. The sport has a traditon as rich as any in the world.

I'm big with dog racing stuff, a month ago I did pick up an autographed Bill Mott Saratoga program at an antique store. I also like programs and racing forms from stakes races.

I spend the summers in Saratoga. I live so much if the history.
I just picked up some New York bred stuff and Hall of Fame Rachel pin. ![]() I have some horse shoes from Syndegaard (New York horse) and a few other winners. I also picked up a nice Alabama Stakes plate with jockey Jerry Bailey and Silver Bullet. I have several of the programs including the Travers Stakes.

I'm more of a racing fan than collector but I do pick up Secretariat and Ron Turcotte items when I come across them at good prices. Calvin Borel, too.
OT--the sad decline of Sam Houston Raceway here in town is depressing.

Chuck,
Yeah, the Spa is a very special place. Made my first trip there from North Jersey in 1975. Your Rachel pin brings back some fairly recent memories. I had a pretty decent cold punch Pick 3 the day of her Woodward victory. The Godolphin horse who one the stake before the Woodward, Macho Again in the Woodward, and the winner of the next race. Thought I had her at the 1/16th pole but, in what makes this game so great, she dug down and held on until the wire. Courage. I was there for Alydar/Affirmed and plenty of other big events over the years, but I never heard that place rock like it did for that Woodward. You are fortunate to be able to summer there. I manage a few day trips. Here's hoping for better weather this year than last - ugh! it was wet. |

There are lots of British cigarette card sets related to horse racing if you’re looking to add some cards to your collection. They are relatively inexpensive.

In the few years I've been a regular, I've seen some great horses and races. But it's also a great place to spot former sports stars.
Barry Switzer, Bill Parcel and Lawrence Taylor are regs. But Evey now and then I spot a hockey and European soccer guy. David Cassidy (Patridge Family) loved this place. His ashes were scattered here. By the way, I have early release of the Borel induction posters. (I know the official artist) And the National Racing Museum is just down the street.

There's also the E47 American Caramel issue of jockeys, pretty easily affordable and only 20 cards to the set. Here's the Gallery, from the non-sports forum: http://www1.coe.neu.edu/~dan/z-ns-E47/go.html
