Died today after a battle with pancreatic cancer. While he only had occasional success here in the US, he was an icon in South Africa. Fought apartheid through music, ditching a comfortable professorship for playing in a bi-racial band, Juluka. His music and the message it contained was always positive and hopeful. A great live performer, he gave an energetic performance even on his final world tour in 2017-18, which I caught at BB King's in NYC. If you don't know his music, go to Spotify or YouTube and listen to 'Dela', 'Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World', 'Scatterlings of Africa' or 'Asimbonanga' to see what I mean.
