Have you ever seen something cool going on in a photograph that 'probably' had nothing to do with the main subject?
Post up.

I love looking at photos and looking at the people behind the main subject.
I do not have a specific example right now but there have to be so many stories behind the main subject and I try to figure them out!! |

When I was working on Oriole Park at Camden Yards back in 1991 I got to design the usher uniforms. I wanted to create something that was classier that the usual polo shirts ushers wore at the time so I looked to the past. This was before the internet so there was no easy searchable databases to see what ushers in the old days wore. So I had to think outside the box. What I did was look in the back grounds of team photos and more often than not an usher or hot dog salesman would sneak into the background, and soon I had a nice collection of vintage usher reference to work from.

Here's the unintentional 'photo bomb' that led to this thread:

One of my favorite "oddball" photos is of Chief Bender mowing the outfield grass in 1916 while he was with the Phillies. Note how the grounds crewman looks perplexed as he holds Chief Bender's glove while the fully uniformed player mows the grass.

I have a photo of Jim Jeffries on his farm that shows the mountains and northeast end of Burbank as they appeared 110 years ago when it was all farmland and scrub.

Here's the photo that my 'tiny Mick' came from (didn't want to post it in case someone here was bidding on it). Looks similar to Mick's pose in the 'iconic' shot of him tossing his batting helmet - this photo would be perfect if he were tossing the helmet.

Here we have a basic ballplayer-fan heartwarming scene with Vandy signing autographs for an excited throng of people during the height of his popularity.
The kid in the back, however, doesn't appear to care less. LOL BTW, is that Cosmo Kramer in his youth in the back right? Just sayin'... Last edited by Scott Garner; 01-20-2016 at 04:27 AM. |

One of my favorites. It's a negative I won in a Yee auction a couple years ago.
Notice the guy to Lou's right with the ball and pen. Proof that are some real Gehrig signed balls out there. LOL ![]()

Here is one more image to share that kinda fits.
An unusual smiling photo of notorious badass and surly Bob Gibson taken at his locker in his legendary 1968 season where he finished with a miserly 1.12 ERA. The bumper sticker in the background is the classic catch phrase on Rowan and Martin's Laugh In: "Here Comes Da Judge". Indeed Gibson was the man in 1968! I've shown this image on net54 before, but it fits this thread.
This is a photo that was taken of the photo/media coverage of Bob Feller's 1st pitching appearance after returning from WWII in 1945. Many of you may recall that Bob Feller was the 1st major leaguer (and professional athlete) to enlist in WWII after the attack Pearl Harbor. He officially enlisted on Dec. 9th, 1941 and essentially forfeited 3 huge years in his great ML career to serve his country. FWIW, I love all of these elements of this photo: * The actual history behind the moment * The classic Bob Feller windup * The photographers all positioned to try to capture * The beautiful backdrop of Cleveland's Municipal Stadium A few years ago I was able to pair this photo with a scored program and ticket that I had in my collection, making it the perfect trifecta. I thank the OP for this interesting thread. And I thank board member Gary Passamonte for introducing me to the term "Photo Bomber" some time ago. On 8x10's...first photo in the center background, second item lower right and and number three maybe all the kids on top and the one with three arms on the far right.
